Ambiguous Referent
MS 1120.76 · Practices and doctrines
An Ambiguous Referent is any entity, state, or phenomenon catalogued within the Tower for which observation, description, or measurement generates at least two mutually exclusive, yet equally valid, definitive statements. The classification is governed by the Manual of Concrete Referents, which establishes Ambiguous Referents as a core ontological category distinct from both Concrete and Hypothetical Referents. Per Ruling 88theta, a designation does not expire with the apparent dissolution of its referent, provided the referent was originally catalogued under a valid ontological anchor, a principle that applies with particular force to Ambiguous Referents due to their intrinsic instability.
Operational Definition
The formal criteria, as amended in the Third Concordance, Annex 7, require that for an entity to be classified as an Ambiguous Referent, it must simultaneously satisfy two conditions: it must be verifiably present within a designated Tower holding, and it must sustain at least two contradictory primary descriptors that cannot be resolved through higher-order Concordance citation. For example, the entity catalogued in The Aisle of Ambiguous Prepositions as "The Vase Upon the Shelf Beside the Door" is documented as being both ceramic and glass, both intact and shattered, and both occupying shelf 47-A and being absent from that location entirely. All statements are supported by sealed surveyor affidavits from the Bureau of Ambiguous Real Estate.
Taxonomy and Sub-classes
The Department of Ambiguous Metrics maintains the official taxonomy, which includes several sub-classes:
- Locative Ambiguous Referents: Entities with unresolved spatial properties. These constitute the majority of holdings in The Aisle of Ambiguous Prepositions and fall under the joint administrative mandate of the Department and the Bureau of Ambiguous Transit.
- Identical Ambiguous Referents: Entities with unresolved existential or categorical properties. The famous case of "The Librarian Who Is and Is Not On Duty," filed in Index of Ambiguous Precedents under Case Δ-12, is a prime example.
- Mycelial Referents: A specialized class, formalized by the Twelfth Citing Concordance, where the referent exhibits recursive, self-similar ambiguity across multiple scales. Diagnostic criteria are outlined in the First Spire Delineation Protocols, Section 3.11.
- Procedural Ambiguous Referents: As noted in the Third Concordance, certain administrative processes, such as the Cross-Referential Audit, themselves possess no stable procedural referent and are thus classified as Ambiguous.
Measurement and Documentation
Quantification of ambiguity is the domain of Ambiguous Metrics, a field for which the Department of Ambiguous Metrics established the standardized units of measurement. The degree of divergence between contradictory states is measured using tools such as Ambiguous Calipers and The Moss Calipers, with results recorded in Standard Drift Units (SDU). All primary data is permanently archived in the Vault of Ambiguous Records, which operates under the Department's shared mandate. For linguistic ambiguity, the Edict of Ambiguous Frication provides the framework for analysis, while textual instances are curated in The Warren of Ambiguous Fonts.
Controversies in Classification
Scholarly consensus on Ambiguous Referents is notoriously elusive, as the Concordances frequently provide contradictory guidance. A persistent debate concerns whether an Ambiguous Referent that achieves a temporary, consensus-driven resolution of its contradictory states—a phenomenon known as a "Concordant Moment"—should be reclassified. Proponents cite the precedent of the "Settled Stair" (Floor 209, "The Perpetually Ascending/Descending Staircase"), which was briefly declassified following the Hum-based arbitration of Dispute 88theta-γ. Opponents, referencing Ruling 88theta, argue that ontological instability is inherent and permanent, and any apparent resolution is merely a procedural artifact. This dispute is currently held in abeyance under Concordance Addendum 404-β.
Administrative Impact
The existence of Ambiguous Referents necessitates extensive bureaucratic apparatus. Beyond the dedicated Bureaus and Departments, their classification affects shelf-life calculations, cross-referencing protocols, and even lighting regulations within their host aisles. The Index of Ambiguous Precedents serves as the primary legal repository for disputes arising from their management. Furthermore, the presence of a high concentration of Ambiguous Referents on a single floor is often cited in petitions for recalibration of that floor's official number, though no such petition has ever been formally granted.
