Self Contradictory Folio
MS 9175.08 · Practices and doctrines
The Self-Contradictory Folio is a procedural classification and physical binding for documents whose constituent statements negate one another internally, rendering definitive interpretation impossible while maintaining formal validity for archival purposes. Codified under Concordance 22, the designation applies only to folios where contradiction is intrinsic to the text’s semantic content, not a result of external amendment or clerical error. Once certified, a Self-Contradictory Folio is entered into the Master Folio of Pending Evidence and assigned a perpetual review status.
Definition and Certification
A document may be petitioned for classification as a Self-Contradictory Folio upon the discovery of two or more mutually exclusive claims that are:
- Equally supported by the document’s own internal evidence chain.
- Present in the same version of the text, without temporal interpolation.
- Fundamental to the document’s core proposition.
Certification requires filing Form 7,117-δ with the Department of Contradictory Citations. The protocol, detailed in the Protocol for Contradictory Attribution, mandates a three-Librarian review panel. If certified, the folio is bound in a distinctive blue-grey cover with a delta (δ) embossed on the spine, signaling its paradoxical nature to all handling staff.
Procedural Implications
The primary legal effect of the classification, per The Self-Referential Proviso, is the suspension of the document’s authority. No claim within a Self-Contradictory Folio may be cited as precedent, nor may any directive within it be enacted, as to do so would require selecting one contradictory strand over another without procedural justification. However, the folio itself remains a valid archival object. Its physical preservation is mandatory, and it continues to occupy its designated shelf position within the relevant departmental stack. This creates the administrative paradox wherein the folio is both "in effect" as a registered artefact and "not in effect" as a source of authority.
All related petitions, appeals, or subsidiary documents spawned by the folio’s contradictions are routed to the Hall of Procedural Anomalies for triage. A notable application of this process is seen in the precedent set by In re: The Spectral Folio of Floor 4,112, which established that auditory anomalies emanating from a contradictory text are to be treated as evidentiary attachments, not as amendments.
Distinction from Related Classifications
It is crucial to distinguish a Self-Contradictory Folio from a Möbius Folio. The latter concerns documents with topologically impossible binding or infinite regress in pagination, which may contain perfectly coherent text. A Self-Contradictory Folio, by contrast, is often physically conventional but semantically void. It also differs from documents under the Red Folio Precedent, which concerns lengthy investigation records, not inherent logical inconsistency.
The classification shares some procedural DNA with the handling of physical artefacts under the Taxonomy of Paradoxical Objects, particularly Category Gamma (Objects Asserting Mutually Exclusive States). However, the Material Authentication Protocol (MAP) does not apply, as the contradiction is purely linguistic, not material.
Notable Instances
- The Double-Speak Inventory of Floor 1,004
- The first fully certified Self-Contradictory Folio. Its opening clause states, "This inventory is complete," while its final clause asserts, "This inventory is perpetually incomplete." Both clauses are unnumbered and exist on the same physical plane of the parchment.
- Algernon’s Unfinished Proof
- Bound within Algernon’s Folio, this appendix purports to prove that "the Tower’s central stairwell both exists and does not exist at the coordinate point marking Floor 0." The proof’s lemmas systematically undo its own axioms. Per the rulings of Vesper Algernon’s descendants, it remains classified as a Self-Contradictory Folio appended to a larger, coherent work.
- The Edict of Simultaneous Rest and Motion
- Issued from Administrative Floor 44, this edict commanded all lift operators to "maintain absolute stillness while proceeding to the next designated floor." The resulting procedural deadlock was resolved by certifying the edict itself, thus vacating its command while preserving the record of its issuance.
Scholarly Dispute and the Omega Loophole
The primary scholarly dispute concerns the so-called "Omega Loophole," stemming from interpretations of the Omega Discrepancy. A minority school of proceduralists, based in the Scriptorium of the Immanent Folio, argues that a true Self-Contradictory Folio, by embodying both a statement and its negation, actually constitutes a complete logical system. They posit that such folios should be accessible under a special dispensation for paradox-based research. This view is vigorously contested by the mainstream Librarian consensus, which holds that the classification exists solely to quarantine logical hazards. The dispute is itself documented in a meta-folio that some clerks have noted edges perilously close to qualifying for the very designation it debates.
Current Storage and Access Protocol
All active Self-Contradictory Folios are stored in Annex Δ, a stabilized chamber on a non-sequential floor adjacent to the Department of Contradictory Citations. Access requires dual-key authorization and a signed declaration acknowledging the reader’s understanding that no actionable information will be gleaned from the consultation. The folios are shelved in order of certification date, not by subject, as any subject-based taxonomy would be undermined by the folios’ internal negations. A monthly audit confirms each folio’s continued state of contradiction; should a folio’s text somehow resolve into coherence, it would be reclassified and removed from the annex, though no such event has ever been recorded.
