The Purpose Debate
MS 3224.24 · Practices and doctrines
The Purpose Debate is a prolonged administrative and philosophical dispute concerning the ontological validity of the Tower’s floor designations, specifically questioning whether a floor can be considered to have a purpose independent of its contents. The debate is not a singular event but an ongoing procedural status recorded in the Department of Applied Metaphysics since at least Cycle 4,722-Alpha.
Origins and Core Contention
The debate formally originated with a discrepancy discovered between the holdings of Floor 88, the so-called "Wing of Unspoken Things," and the procedural guidelines established under Third Concordance. Ordinance 88-Gamma, which governs cataloguing on that floor, defines the Wing as a "catch-basin for irregularly acquired conceptual plenitude." The scholar Kael, in a series of marginalia later compiled as Proposals for Reform, noted that this definition conflates the floor’s function (to catch) with its purpose (to house the irregularly acquired). Kael argued that while the function was documented, the purpose remained "unstated," a condition which, per Clause 7 of the Twelfth Concordance (the First Edict), renders any passage through the floor technically invalid. This created a paradox: the floor’s contents were being catalogued via passages that, under a strict reading, lacked validated purpose.
The Paradox of the Verified Holding
This initial contradiction blossomed into the central dilemma of the Purpose Debate, known as the Paradox of the Verified Holding. If a floor’s purpose is undefined, then by the Axiom of Documented Intent, any activity upon it is procedurally void. However, the Tower’s catalogues are filled with verified holdings from floors now under scrutiny. The Department of Applied Metaphysics, where the debate is confined, has produced thousands of folios analyzing whether a holding can be considered "real within the Tower" if it was acquired in a space whose purpose was, at the time of acquisition, indeterminate. Proponents of the "Retroactive Validation" school cite Algernon's Theorem on Conceptual Plenitude, suggesting purpose can be irregularly acquired by a floor after its contents are settled. Opponents, adhering to a stricter interpretation of the Fifth Concordance, dismiss this as sophistry, arguing it undermines the foundational principle of recursive validation.
Impact on Structural Classification
The debate has had tangible effects on architectural assessment. The treatise published by the Clerks of the Net Load, which demonstrated the lack of structural purpose in most Age-era buttresses, was directly invoked in the Decree of Austere Function. This Decree mandated that all structural elements must now have a documented purpose separate from their physical role, leading to the peculiar status of features like Stairwell Theta-7, which is officially classified as "A means of vertical transition (purpose: to enable debate concerning the purpose of vertical transition)." Furthermore, the practice of Guided Descent now requires a dual-purpose filing: one for the descent itself and one for the anticipated, yet undocumented, purpose of the destination floor.
“A staircase does not become a debate hall simply because we argue upon it; yet if the argument is its only validated use, then by Concordance it ceases to be a staircase and becomes a hall, leaving us to wonder how we arrived.”
Current Procedural Status
As of the last procedural update (Cycle 9,001-Omega), the Purpose Debate remains "Active-Unresolved." It is governed by a special standing committee operating under the authority of the Fifth Concordance, which meets in the Chamber of Measured Dispute. All new floor designations must now include a Provisional Purpose Statement, filed in triplicate on Form M-7b (Rev.). These statements are, by definition, subject to future debate, creating a growing corpus of meta-purpose: purposes declared for the sole reason of having a purpose to debate. The Intrinsic Numeration Argument is often considered a parallel or subordinate discourse, as the question of whether a floor number implies a purpose remains fiercely contested.
Scholarly Disagreement
The primary schism lies between the Intentionalists and the Functionalists. Intentionalists, following Kael’s line, insist that purpose must be explicit, prior, and distinct from observed activity, drawing support from Annex 7 C of the Ninth Concordance. Functionalists argue that purpose is emergent and synonymous with consistent, documented function, a view they claim is more aligned with the practical administration of The Tower. A third, more radical faction, the Nil-Purposists, argues that the very concept of floor-level purpose is a categorical error, and that only holdings have purpose. Their manuscripts, however, are consistently filed under "Purpose: Unstated" and relegated to the Wing of Unspoken Things, thus perpetuating the very cycle they seek to critique.
