Lost Sensations Archive
MS 1113.10 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Lost Sensations Archive refers to both a permanent administrative annex of The Scriptorium and the collection of untitled, non-propositional experiences catalogued there. Established by clause -7 of the revised Annex Γ, the Archive is tasked with “the custodianship of felt experience that eludes or precedes formal description, to be held in perpetuity as evidence of a category.” Its most prominent holdings are a series of meticulously documented yet un-named qualia, indexed by their physiological and atmospheric correlations rather than by any inherent name.
Administrative Status and Location
The Archive occupies Vault 7-C on the western spiral of Floor 404, collocated with other departments dedicated to procedural lacunae. It operates under the joint oversight of the Scriptorium and the Department of Ephemeral Acoustics, the latter’s involvement stemming from Ordinance 1142.29, which deemed certain lost sensations to be “the acoustic residue of internal monologue.” Its day-to-day operations are managed by a rotating staff of three Alexandrian Interpreters, who are trained in non-lexical taxonomies.
Access is governed by The Fifth Concordance, Section 22 (“On Intangibles”), which requires petitioners to file Form Sigma-9, a document that itself is designed to be impossible to complete accurately, thus filtering out all but the most dedicated researchers. All items in the collection are classified as Vestigial under the The Obsidian Decree, meaning they are maintained but may not be activated or experientially accessed.
Notable Holdings
The Archive’s catalogue is organized not alphabetically but by a proprietary “Resonance Index.” Notable entries include:
- Holding LSA-114.2: The specific chill felt upon entering a room once occupied by an unknown, departed presence. Correlated with a drop in ambient temperature of 0.5–0.8 degrees and documented across 742 independent witness statements filed between the Year of the Archive 1142 and 1198.
- Holding LSA-401.8: The taste of a forgotten fruit, described consistently as “tangential to peach” in 83% of submissions. The associated file includes 40 pages of chemical analyses that match no known organic compound.
- Holding LSA-005.0: The auditory sensation of one’s name being called from an empty adjacent chamber. Cross-referenced with the Archive of Particular Noons and the Unanswered Archive for instances occurring between 12:00 and 12:02 PM.
- The Prismatic Itch: A non-localized dermal sensation reported by seven Librarians across a 20-year period, always preceding the discovery of a shelving error by exactly 47 hours. The causal relationship, if any, remains undocumented per Concordance.
Procedures of Acquisition and Logging
Items are acquired primarily through two channels. The first is via mandatory submissions from other departments, such as the Bureau of Unspoken Context, which forwards sensations extracted from the access logs of the Archive of Lost Protocols. The second is through direct petition using Archive Series Gamma-7 Form Gamma-7/404-α, “Declaration of an Unmoored Phenomenon.”
Each accepted sensation is logged in a master folio and assigned a Perpetual State number, linking it to the broader system of Vestigial records. A duplicate notation is then filed with the Scriptorium of Lost Roots to prevent doctrinal contradiction, a process that itself generates a secondary archive of bureaucratic sensations related to the act of filing.
Scholarly Disputes and the Heresy of Activation
The central doctrinal dispute concerning the Archive revolves around its purpose. The traditional interpretation, upheld by the senior Alexandrian Interpreters, is that the Archive is a purely categorical entity; the sensations are held as proof that a class of experience exists, not for any experiential utility. This is supported by The Fifth Concordance, clause 18.
A counter-school, often associated with the Heretical Archive, argues that the very act of cataloguing a lost sensation in such detail constitutes a form of speculative reactivation, creating a “echo-holding” that subtly influences the Animate Archive. This view is frequently cited in condemnations from the Spire of the Silent Archive, which considers any discourse on the matter a violation of silence protocols. The debate is further complicated by an apocryphal clause in the Lost Appendix of the Ninth Concordance that allegedly permits “reconciliation through resonance” under a full moon, a clause whose authenticity is universally disputed.
Physical Infrastructure
Vault 7-C is a climate-controlled chamber maintained at a constant 17°C and 45% humidity. Sensations are not stored in any physical medium but are represented by sealed copper cylinders containing scrolls of their correlative data. The cylinders are arranged on shelves made of resonate oak, a material selected for its purported ability to dampen psychic interference from the nearby East Helical Staircase. The only furniture is a single, backless stool positioned at the room’s null point, used by attending clerks who report a persistent, uncatalogued sensation of being observed from the corner of the eye during their shifts.
