Exegetical School of Primary Essence
MS 6874.76 · Practices and doctrines
Exegetical School of Primary Essence is a sub-sect of the Ontological School that contends the true essence of any Tower holding is located not within its designated category, but within the earliest authoritative commentary made upon it. The school’s doctrine posits that essence is a fluid property, crystallizing at the moment of first serious exegesis and becoming fixed thereafter, regardless of subsequent re-categorizations.
“To parse the text is to birth the thing; the commentariat precedes the catalogue.” — Aris Thorne, Exegetical Commentary on the Third Concordance, V.2
Core Doctrine
The school distinguishes between designative essence (the provisional classification assigned by a cataloguer) and exegetical essence (the immutable nature revealed by the first valid interpretive act). A holding’s exegetical essence is deemed retroactive, applying to the holding from the moment of its accession into the Tower. This creates a temporal paradox the school embraces: a holding may exist for centuries with a false or incomplete essence, awaiting the scholar who will, in commenting upon it, define what it has always been.
For example, a ledger originally catalogued under “Floor 14: Ephemeral Accounts” might languish for years before a researcher’s marginal note linking its cipher to Declarative Parsing protocols. According to the Exegetical School, the ledger’s primary essence as a cryptographic key was established not upon its creation or cataloguing, but at the moment that marginal note was authored.
Formal Recognition and Charter
The school was formally chartered by Ordinance 881-Γ-4 in 881, following the doctrinal precedents set during the Fifth Review of Essence. Its charter, however, was a point of significant contention. The Axiomatic School of Librarianship argued that granting essence-forming power to commentary undermined the authority of the original cataloguer, while the Synod of Dusty Corners expressed concern over the infinite regress of essences—if a commentary defines an essence, what defines the essence of the commentary?
The school’s current seat of operation is Floor 312, “The Annotated Stacks,” though its members are dispersed, their work identified by a distinct sigil: a closed parenthesis followed by an infinity symbol, denoting commentary without end.
Methodology: The Four Exegetical Lenses
Practitioners employ a rigorous methodology to identify “first authoritative commentary.” Not all annotations qualify. The school recognizes four validated lenses of exegesis:
- Contextual: Commentary that places the holding within a known sequence or precedent (e.g., “Cf. Annex 77, disputation 12”).
- Contradictory: Commentary that explicitly negates or challenges the holding’s surface designation.
- Procedural: Commentary that outlines a method for the holding’s use or interpretation, thereby defining its function.
- Citational: Commentary that links the holding to another, previously established essence, as per Clause 9 of the Thirteenth Concordance.
A commentary must be signed, dated, and recorded in a central register (such as the Registry of Protocols) to be considered authoritative. Anonymous marginalia, while potentially insightful, cannot confer primary essence.
Scholarly Disputes and Paradoxes
The school’s most vocal opposition comes from the School of Static Ontology, which maintains that essence is invariant and inherent, not conferred by interpretation. Their ongoing disputation, detailed in Annex 77, remains unresolved by Division I: Ontological Paradoxes.
Internally, the school is divided on the issue of recursive essence. The Originalist faction holds that the essence conferred by the first commentary is final. The Progressive faction, aligning somewhat with the School of Predictive Curation, argues that if a later commentary successfully re-interprets the first commentary, it can thereby alter the primary essence of the original holding. This debate has produced the well-known “Essence of the Footnote” paradox, wherein a footnote to a commentary has been argued to contain the primary essence of both the commentary and the source material.
Notable Applications and Holdings
The school’s principles have been applied to resolve several high-profile cataloguing disputes:
- The re-essencing of the Quodlibet Alloy from “Unstable Composite” to “Dialectical Catalyst” was based on a procedural commentary by a Junior Lumener in 734.
- The Gallery of Literal Portraits was determined to have a primary essence of “Biographical Instrument” rather than “Artistic Holding” after a contradictory commentary questioned the subjects’ lack of shadows.
- The school is currently petitioning for a review of the HIC Directive 003, arguing that a citational commentary linking it to obsolete resonance-dampening protocols has revealed its true essence as a “Legacy Safeguard,” not an active directive.
The Exegetical School of Primary Essence remains a powerful, if controversial, force within Tower scholarship, continually asserting that the true meaning of a thing lies not in what it is called, but in what is first said about it.
