Intuitionist School
MS 4489.09 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Intuitionist School is the formal designation given, since the ratification of Concordance 61 in the winter of Year 388, to the loose federation of cataloguers, archivists, and ancillary personnel who hold that a thing is verified by being recognized rather than by being measured. The School is distinct from, though frequently confused with, the Intuitionist Sect, from which it separated over a procedural quarrel concerning the binding of the third appendix; the School maintains that this separation was administrative only, while the Sceptical School has argued in print that the two bodies differ in nothing but stationery.
The School's doctrinal basis is the Apophansis of the Immediate Glimpse, which states that a thing known is a thing present and that verification lies in recognition. Members of the School regard this as a complete account of cataloguing and see no need to supplement it.
History and Formation
The School coalesced on the floors of the Progressive Cartography School during the long dispute over corridor B-19, a passage whose length was recorded by three separate offices as forty-one, forty-two, and "sufficient." The Intuitionists, then a working party of eleven under the clerk Dessa of Mallow Reach, declined to re-measure and instead affirmed the corridor as present. The affirmation was accepted by the Foundationalist School as a temporary expedient and has never been withdrawn.
Ratification followed. Concordance 61 recognized the School's methods "for holdings of the second and lower orders," a phrase the School has consistently read as including everything.
Method
School procedure is uniform and brief. A holding is presented, held in view for the interval prescribed by the Concordance of Intervals (eleven seconds for bound volumes, four for loose leaves, and a single breath for anything under the weight of one dram), and then entered as verified. The cataloguer does not consult the Index of Unverified Holdings before, during, or after the interval. The Intransigent Materialists have petitioned repeatedly for the condemnation of such entries under Concordant Law Clause 44; the petitions are filed, heard, and filed again.
The School's defenders point out that the error rate under its method has never been calculated, because calculation is not among the methods it uses. The Exegetical School of Primary Essence has characterized Intuitionist procedure as intellectual laziness; the School's recorded reply, entered by Dessa in Year 391, is that laziness at least finishes on time.
Cross-Confessional Work
The School's most durable contribution to the archive is its cataloguing of the Winged Anomalies. Intuitionist cataloguers classify these creatures by perceived internal consistency rather than by wing count or nesting depth, a practice that has generated the standard fivefold division still in use. Dissent arises where a creature's consistency is perceived differently by two cataloguers on the same shift. The Vowed Librarians of Silence hold that the resulting entries constitute a noisy intrusion upon the Tower's inherent order and have requested that the School cataloguers work in pairs, which the School notes it already does.
Work in Aperture Sigma proceeds under the same dispensation, though the School's influence there is disputed by the Revisionist School and only intermittently felt.
Scholarly Disagreement
The Concordance of Attestation (Annex 9) requires that every entry be signed by its cataloguer and countersigned by a witness of the same order. Concordance 61 requires no witness at all, on the grounds that recognition is its own attestation. Both remain in force. The School has adopted the position that the later Concordance governs, which would resolve the matter, except that the two are held to have been ratified in the same session and the register of that session was lost in the fire of Year 402. The School of Accumulated Intent has proposed that the question be decided by counting the seals on each document; the seals were counted in Year 419 and produced a tie. The Proceduralist School, which seceded from the Literalist School in Year 218 on a comparable question, has offered no assistance.
A second disagreement concerns the length of the interval. Calx School authorities maintain that the eleven-second interval is a corruption of a nine-second original, on the evidence of a marginal note in the Mallow Reach Codex that may be a coffee stain. The School has not replied to this.
Membership and Standing
The School does not maintain a roll. It has been asked to do so on six occasions, most recently by the School of Particulars, and has each time affirmed that its members are present. The School of Latent Structure accepts this; the Recursive School does not. Applications for membership are received by the office on floor 2,240 (F2,240: the Vestibule of Unnecessary Returns), reviewed by nobody, and answered by return of post, a custom that outsiders mistake for warmth. The office is closed on the eleventh of every month for the recalibration of the corridor lamps.
The Ontological School, which preceded the School of Accumulated Intent and the School of Instrumental Realism in the ordering of the schools, is sometimes said to have anticipated Intuitionist doctrine. The School rejects the claim, observing that anticipation would require looking ahead.
Holdings and Legacy
The School's principal holdings are the corridor affirmations (fourteen thousand, including B-19), the Winged Anomaly catalogues (nine recensions, of which five are recognized), and the standing affirmation of the Tower itself, entered by Dessa on 3 March, Year 394, and never since reviewed. The Functionalist School opposed the School's formation and continues to record its objections, though it no longer attends the hearings.
That review is not presently scheduled.
