Intuitionist Sect

MS 8925.11 · Guilds, orders and offices

Intuitionist Sect refers to a semi-formalized body of cataloguers, archivists, and ancillary personnel who reject the premise of Concordant Law as the primary mechanism for verifying and indexing holdings. The sect operates on the principle that an entry's coherence is self-evident and does not require external validation through procedural cross-reference or adherence to the numbered annexes of Concordant Law. While not officially recognized as a Librarian order, its influence is pervasive, particularly on Floors 7, 13, and the disputed interstitial zone known as Aperture Sigma.

Core Doctrine

The sect’s foundational axiom is articulated in the Apophansis of the Immediate Glimpse, which states: “A thing known is a thing present; its verification lies in the act of its recognition, not in the tracing of its pedigree.” In practice, this manifests as a cataloguing methodology that prioritizes the cataloguer’s immediate, unmediated apprehension of a subject’s essence over the laborious process of checking its consistency against existing records. This is often mischaracterized by opponents, such as the Exegetical School of Primary Essence, as a form of intellectual laziness. The Intuitionists argue it is instead a higher form of rigour, one that trusts the Tower’s own implicit logic over the fallible and frequently contradictory paperwork of the Librarians.

Operational Praxis

Intuitionist cataloguers are known for producing entries that are rich in perceived internal consistency but often lack the standard citational apparatus. A typical Intuitionist holding might describe, for example, the nesting habits of the Winged Anomalies based on a single, vividly recalled observation, extrapolating an entire ethology without ever consulting the Ornithological Annexes. Their workstations are notably sparse, lacking the sprawling networks of reference cords and update pulleys used by traditionalists. Instead, they favor clean desks and what they term “attentional basins”—small, concave dishes of polished stone said to focus the mind.

The sect maintains several “Silent Stacks,” collections of materials organized according to intuitive resonance rather than alphanumeric sequence. Accessing these stacks is said to require a momentary suspension of intentional search, allowing the needed material to, as one adherent described it, “step forward of its own accord.”

Controversies and Disputes

The Intuitionists are perpetually in conflict with more established bodies. The Vowed Librarians of Silence view their methods as a noisy intrusion upon the Tower’s inherent order. The Reconstructionist Guild dismisses their outputs as “fabulated cataloguing,” useless for any serious restorative work. The most pointed legal opposition comes from the Intransigent Materialists, who have successfully petitioned for the condemnation of several Intuitionist entries under Clause 44 (Pertaining to Unsubstantiated Phenomena).

A persistent scholarly disagreement centers on whether Intuitionist methods are a valid, if unorthodox, form of discovery, or merely a systematic form of error. Concordance 33, particularly its sections on evidentiary standards, is frequently invoked against them. However, the Intuitionists cite the frequent internal contradictions within the Concordances themselves as proof that proceduralism is no guarantor of truth.

Relationship to Other Sects

The sect finds unlikely allies in the Preservers, specifically those factions who believe preservation is about maintaining a “vital impression” rather than a physical artifact. Both groups share a distrust of overly mechanistic systems. Conversely, their relationship with the Sect of the Thirsty Page is one of profound antipathy. The Hydrators’ literal, consumptive approach to knowledge represents the antithesis of the Intuitionist’s contemplative, non-appropriative ideal. Debates between them often devolve into accusations of “dry literalism” versus “vaporous thinking.”

They are also noted critics of the Heretical Cartographers, whom they accuse of merely replacing one rigid system (the floor-number grid) with another (the subjective topological map), thus missing the true, fluid nature of the Tower’s structure.

Notable Productions

Despite—or because of—their controversial methods, the Intuitionist Sect has contributed several holdings to the general archive that have resisted attempts at re-cataloguing or invalidation. These include:

  • The Catalogue of Echoes That Precede Sound: A multi-volume work detailing auditory phenomena reported in empty transit shafts, compiled entirely from witness testimony deemed “internally consistent” by the compilers.
  • The so-called “Sigma Anomalies File,” which pre-emptively catalogued several features later physically documented in Aperture Sigma, though through intuitive prediction rather than expedition.
  • Procedures for the Maintenance of Ephemeral Stairs: A manual for ascending stairways that manifest only under certain conditions of light and attention, now standard issue for crews servicing the upper reaches of Gol77 Alpha.

Their most cited, and most disputed, work remains the Index of Latent Doors, which posits the existence of access points throughout the Tower that are not physically present but become so when the need for them is perfectly understood.
