Heretical Cartographers
MS 8029.77 · Practices and doctrines
The Heretical Cartographers are an unsanctioned, decentralized group within the Tower whose core activity involves the production, analysis, and deconstruction of cartographic principles and their attendant documents, known as Cartae. They are distinguished by their application of sanctioned guild methodologies—primarily those of the Guild of Formal Cartographers—to subvert or challenge the foundational axioms of sanctioned cartography from within its own logical framework.
Methodology and Praxis
Heretical Cartography is not defined by a singular goal but by a characteristic methodological stance. Its practitioners engage deeply with the Protocols of Manifest Delineation, the Presumption of Completeness, and the formal syntax used by sanctioned guilds. Their work typically proceeds by accepting these systems as premises and then tracing their logical consequences to points of paradox, tautology, or unresolvable contradiction. A common tactic is the identification of an "arbitrary stopping point" within an approved process, such as the resolution to the Infinite Regress of Comparison, arguing that such a point represents a doctrinal, rather than a logical, necessity.
Their output ranges from annotated critiques of official Cartae to the production of entirely new, "heretical" maps that obey formal rules while depicting logically impossible or administratively inconvenient spaces. The group maintains no central archive; instead, its works are propagated through a network of conceptual repositories known as Heretical Archives.
Designation and Legal Status
The formal designation of "Heretical" is applied under the authority of the Third Concordance, specifically Clause 14, Subsection Omega. This clause empowers the Provenance Archive to receive and adjudicate Petitions of Orthodoxy filed against cartographic works or collections. A finding of heresy results in the affected archive receiving the Heretical designation, which triggers specific regulatory protocols. For instance, the Indexers Guild is required to issue a pre-clearance warrant for any new acquisition of materials from a designated Heretical Archive, a process noted for its considerable bureaucratic delay.
It is a common misconception that Heretical Cartographers constitute a formal guild. They explicitly reject the guild structure, viewing the chartering process—exemplified by the establishment of the Guild of Formal Cartographers on 17 Kalend 732—as a mechanism of co-option. This places them in contrast with Independent Cartographers, who seek guild status but have been rejected by established bodies such as the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild and the Guild of Precedential Cartographers.
Notable Interventions and Controversies
The Heretical Cartographers are most frequently cited in disputes concerning the Tower's non-Euclidean and recursive spaces. A seminal and ongoing intervention concerns the Atrium of Unfixed Horizons. While sanctioned cartography treats its infinite expanse as a bureaucratic fact, Heretical analyses argue this is a "bureaucratic fiction" maintained to avoid mapping the administrative boundaries of the Atrium itself.
Another prominent controversy involves the placement of apertures between Galleries. A faction of Heretical Cartographers insists, with considerable formal proof, that the primary aperture of the Gallery of Unfixed Perspectives is logically situated within the Gallery of Receding Perspectives on Floor 7,114. This claim, while formally coherent, would render several approved navigational schemata obsolete and has been dismissed under the Presumption of Completeness.
Figures such as Aethelred of the Unseen Corners are often associated with heretical thought, though no direct institutional link has been proven. Their critiques are frequently compiled in unofficial volumes like the Compendium of Unheeded Dissents.
Material and Logistical Support
Despite their unsanctioned status, Heretical Cartographers are not wholly isolated from the Tower's material supply chains. They are known to procure materials—vellum, inks, calibrated compasses—from the Cartographers' Auxiliary, which is obligated to supply all practitioners of cartography, irrespective of doctrinal alignment. This has led to periodic, though unsuccessful, petitions from the Metaphorical Cartel to have the Auxiliary's charter amended to permit ideological vetting of recipients.
The relationship is pragmatic: the Auxiliary fulfills its mandate, and the Heretical Cartographers obtain the tools necessary to produce critiques that are, by necessity, impeccable in their formal craftsmanship. This access underscores the central irony of their position: their most potent critiques are enabled by the very infrastructure they seek to interrogate.
Scholarly Disagreement
The primary scholarly debate regarding the Heretical Cartographers does not concern their findings but their classification. The Provenance Archive maintains that heresy is a property of an archive or a work, not of individuals, as per the Third Concordance. A concurrent view, often cited in the Fifth and Ninth Concordances, argues that a sustained pattern of engaging with heretical archives for the purpose of producing further heretical content constitutes a heretical practice, which may in turn be attributed to a practitioner or group. This contradiction remains unresolved, allowing the Heretical Cartographers to operate in a jurisdictional gap between the regulation of documents and the regulation of individuals.
