Metacatalogical Theory

MS 7012.16 · Practices and doctrines

Metacatalogical Theory refers to the branch of Tower philosophy concerned with the principles governing the creation, classification, and ontological implications of the Tower’s own catalogues. It is the study of cataloguing as an act, distinct from the study of any specific catalogued subject. The theory’s central axiom, as articulated in Clause 17 of the Twelfth Concordance, is that “a catalogue entry does not describe a thing; it is the thing’s first permissible instance.”

Foundational Principles

The development of formal Metacatalogical Theory is generally dated to the post-Particularist period, following the crisis of infinite regress prompted by the Catalogue of Catalogues incident on Spiral 422. The core principles were codified by Archivist-Logician K. Valence in the Treatise on Bureaucratic Ontology. Valence posited three interdependent pillars:

  • The Principle of Generative Documentation: The act of inscribing a subject into a Concordance-approved schema (Form RV-9, Docket Σ, etc.) generates the minimal ontological framework required for that subject to interact with Tower space-time. This is not creation ex nihilo, but rather the granting of “archival citizenship.”
  • The Principle of Contextual Absolutism: A subject’s properties are absolute within the context of its defining catalogue entry, but only within that context. This resolves apparent contradictions between entries by relegating them to different jurisdictional layers of reality, a concept later refined by Absorptive Theory.
  • The Principle of Referential Inertia: Once an entry is linked to from another authorized entry, it accrues a form of existential momentum, making its deletion or fundamental alteration procedurally, and perhaps ontologically, hazardous. This principle underpins the creation of conceptual load-bearing structures woven from dialogic seeds.

Operational Frameworks

Metacatalogical Theory provides the procedural backbone for several key Tower departments. The Department of Applied Metaphysics uses its frameworks to determine when a theoretical gap necessitates the creation of a holding, as per the Manual. Similarly, the Acoustic Reconciliation Bureau applies metacatalogical filters to distinguish between aberrant sonic phenomena and legitimate, cataloguable “echoes” with independent ontological weight.

The theory is most visibly applied in the resolution of archival disputes. For example, whether a newly discovered chamber constitutes a “room” (requiring a floor-plan annex) or a “dimensional annexure” (requiring a metaphysical impact assessment) is a metacatalogical determination. The famed dispute between Superintendent M. Selvage and the Office of Vertical Integrity regarding the “Dual Aperture” theory was, at its core, a metacatalogical debate over the classification of apertures as structural features versus narrative devices.

Scholarly Disputes and Amendments

The primary schism in Metacatalogical Theory concerns the origin of cataloguable subjects. The Proceduralist School, following Valence, maintains that the bureaucratic act itself is the genesis. The rival Anticipatory School, championed by theorist Hieronymous Selvage, argues that the Tower’s numbering systems (such as that of Spiral 899) exhibit a “designation resonance” that anticipates subjects, which then manifest in accordance with archival need. Selvage’s critique of the Rod of Resonance was grounded in this belief that cataloguing merely formalizes a pre-existing ontological debt.

This disagreement was partially synthesized in Amendment 9 to Annex G of the Twelfth Concordance, which introduced the concept of the “Metaphorical Foundry.” This amendment states that certain catalogical classes function as “templates that generate their own requisite content,” blending Proceduralist mechanics with Anticipatory intuition. However, implementation remains inconsistent, leading to situations where, for instance, a shift in prevailing Absorptive Theory can render an original classification obsolete, forcing a cascade of Form RV-9 submissions to reconcile the archival record with the new metacatalogical reality.

Practical Consequences and Anomalies

The theory’s most direct consequence is the phenomenon of the “autocatalytic entry.” These are holdings that, by the very nature of their cataloguing, create the conditions for additional, related entries to become necessary. The cataloguing of Splenic Swamp, for instance, generated a sub-category for “humours in landscape form,” which subsequently required the invention of seven distinct measurement scales for melancholic permeability, leading to the establishment of an entire sub-department.

A persistent anomaly within the theory is the handling of “negative entries”—catalogues of things confirmed not to exist within the Tower. The Treatise on Perpendicular Time argues these function as metacatalogical inhibitors, defining the boundaries of the possible. However, the Seventh Concordance contradicts this, implying negative entries are merely placeholders for future Absorptive events. This unresolved contradiction means that filing a Form RV-9 to de-catalogue a non-existent subject remains one of the most complex and paradox-prone procedures in the Librarian’s remit.
