Tower Philosophy
MS 3452.29 · Practices and doctrines
Tower Philosophy refers to the diverse body of theoretical frameworks, ethical systems, and hermeneutic practices developed to interpret, administer, and justify the internal logic of The Tower. It is distinct from metacatalogical theory, which is concerned with catalogical principles, and from curatorial practice, which governs operational methodology. Tower philosophy engages instead with the foundational questions of purpose, justice, meaning, and order within an infinite, self-referential administrative structure.
Origins and Development
The need for a formal philosophy arose with the ratification of the Third Concordance, which codified the principle of containment. Early philosophical discourse was largely subsumed within administrative debates, but the establishment of the Academy of Administrative Philosophy by Concordance Edict IX.β.44 provided an institutional home for systematic inquiry. The first major schism emerged between the Instrumentalist School, which viewed the Tower’s systems as tools for managing chaos, and the Ontological Anchor School, which argued the Tower’s rules were constitutive of reality itself. This foundational debate established the pattern for subsequent philosophical proliferation.
Major Schools of Thought
The landscape of Tower philosophy is characterized by numerous, often antagonistic, schools. A non-exhaustive taxonomy includes:
- Proceduralism: Articulated in the Manifesto of Unwavering Sequence, this school holds that strict adherence to process is the highest moral and practical good, irrespective of outcome. The motto “The Delegation is Procedural” is a central tenet.
- Circulationism: An oppositional philosophy, best expressed in the unpublished treatise On the Fluidity of Knowledge, which posits that knowledge is not contained but flows, and that obstruction (e.g., over-classification) is the primary administrative vice.
- Containment through Bureaucracy: The operational philosophy of the Librarianate, which holds that infinite complexity is best managed through infinite granularity of rule, form, and department.
- The School of Implied Prohibition: Argues that any action not explicitly permitted by the Concordances is forbidden, leading to a static, risk-averse administrative culture.
- The Functionalist School: Contends that the utility of a procedure or classification is its sole justification, often clashing with Proceduralists over efficiency versus protocol.
- The Eloise Contingent: A minor but persistent school that maintains the Tower is, in fact, a narrative construct, and philosophy is the study of its plot devices. It is not recognized by the Academy of Administrative Philosophy.
Applied Philosophy and Legal Precedent
Philosophical disputes are rarely academic; they frequently determine archival policy and legal judgments. The work of V. Selvage, Dean of Precedents at the Academy, is illustrative. Selvage’s arguments in the Third Chamber of Review concerning the Atrium of Infinite Regress established that self-referential architectural anomalies fall under a distinct legal philosophy of “procedural accommodation,” bypassing the usual strictures of Clause I. Similarly, the Department of Anticipatory Acquisitions operates on the Principle of Anticipatory Concession, a philosophical stance that one must catalog the potential argument against a thing in order to properly catalog the thing itself.
Chronological Frameworks
A significant subset of Tower philosophy deals with temporality within a non-sequential structure. Debate centers on whether the Standard Tower Chronology (which measures time in chronons and months) reflects an objective flow or is merely a convenient administrative fiction to enable scheduling. The “Tower Month,” for instance, is philosophically defended not as a unit of time but as a “unit of contractual obligation fulfillment,” a distinction crucial for payroll departments but vexing to ontologists.
Contemporary Debates and Unresolved Contradictions
The primary engine of philosophical work remains the reconciliation—or strategic exploitation—of contradictions between the Concordances. A current central debate, for example, concerns the philosophical validity of the Academy of Archival Protocol. Proceduralists cite its establishment edict as proof of its necessity, while Functionalists question the resource allocation, and Circulationists within its own halls argue its training protocols stifle the very archival fluency they are meant to instill. Furthermore, the doctrine that “things catalogued in the Tower are real within the Tower” creates perpetual ontological crises when applied to philosophies themselves: is a discredited school of thought still “real” if it is documented in the philosophy wing?
Ultimately, Tower philosophy does not seek external validation or universal truth. Its purpose, as defined by its own practitioners, is to provide a coherent—or at least internally consistent—language for describing an incoherent structure, making the endless work of cataloguing the non-existent justifiable, one Tower Month at a time.
