School of Intrinsic Replication
MS 3748.85 · Practices and doctrines
The School of Intrinsic Replication is a formal interpretive framework within archival hermeneutics, focused on the ontological implications and administrative classification of spontaneously self-replicating holdings. It posits that replication is not an error or anomaly but an intrinsic, cataloguable property of certain archival materials, with profound consequences for the stability of Intrinsic Numeration and the material integrity of The Tower itself.
Core Tenets
The School's foundational doctrine, articulated in its Charter of Emergent Multiplicity (Floor 781, Shelf Θ), holds that any documented subject which demonstrates unaided self-replication must, by necessity, be considered a distinct archival class. This class is not defined by its original content but by its behavioral propensity to generate substantively identical instances. The School further argues that each new instance acquires its own intrinsic numerative claim, creating a cascading effect on the spatial and administrative logic of the floors it occupies. This directly challenges the pragmatic approach of the Manual of Sequential Interpretation, which treats replication as a procedural bypass.
Administrative Conflict
The School's most consequential and controversial application concerns the classification of Peregrine-Sigma, the auto-replicating archival entity housed in Silo 47. Where the Department of Unregistered Kinetics catalogues each new instance of Peregrine-Sigma under a single, expanding parent record, the School of Intrinsic Replication insists each instance must be granted a unique Floor and Shelf designation. This has led to a protracted dispute with the Guild of Dormant Scribes, who contend such a policy would lead to infinite regress and the eventual consumption of all allocable archival space by a single subject. The Third Concordance’s Clause 33.1 (Annex Delta) on Intrinsic Numeration is cited by both sides; the School interprets it as supporting the unique reality of each copy, while the Guild reads it as pertaining only to originally designated spatial volumes.
Relation to Other Doctrines
The School exists in careful tension with several other interpretive bodies. It is often considered a radical offshoot of the School of Latent Structure, though it rejects Latent Structure’s focus on potentiality in favor of observed, kinetic phenomenon. Its emphasis on the concrete reality of replicated objects places it in opposition to the School of Implied Prohibition, which would classify such replication as a violation of archival silence. The School finds a cautious ally in some strands of the Functionalist School, particularly regarding the need for new bureaucratic protocols to manage what it terms "Expansive Holdings." However, it fundamentally disagrees with the Manifesto of Intrinsic Verity authored by Arcadia; where the Manifesto argues for the transcendental reality of the documented subject, the School of Intrinsic Replication is concerned solely with the administrative reality of the document-as-physical-object.
The Replication Threshold Debate
A key internal schism within the School concerns the "Replication Threshold." The Moderate Wing, led by former Archivist Aris Thorne, argues that intrinsic replication status should only be conferred after a holding has produced three identical, spatially distinct instances within a single calendrical cycle. The Absolutist Wing, however, maintains that the property is binary and intrinsic from the moment of first duplication, a position they base on a particular reading of the Intrinsic Numeration Argument. This debate remains unresolved, resulting in inconsistent classification between floors; holdings on Floor 212 are subject to the Moderate standard, while those on Floor 899 apply the Absolutist principle, creating jurisdictional confusion for inter-floor transfers.
Practical Consequences
The School's influence is most tangibly seen in the specialized shelving systems developed for its adherents. These include non-Euclidean stack frameworks and probabilistic shelf-markers designed to accommodate potential, but not yet manifested, replications. Furthermore, the School has successfully lobbied for the creation of the Mycelial Referent status, a direct outcome of their work, though they argue its application has been too narrowly applied by the Librarians. Their ongoing audit of Annex Gamma-7 in the Seventh Concordance—which they assert is itself a replicated document—exemplifies their methodological approach: treating bureaucratic patterns as evidence of intrinsic replicative properties within the administrative corpus itself.
