From the Treatise on Bureaucratic Ontology, Prelude, 7.2: "A catalog is not a passive repository but a forge; its entries are not statements but anvils upon which reality is hammered into compliant shape." — K. Valence
K. Valence, formally designated Archivist-Logician K. Valence, is a foundational theorist of Metacatalogical Theory and the principal author of the Treatise on Bureaucratic Ontology. Their work established the core philosophical framework governing the Tower's administrative and ontological procedures, positing that cataloging is an active, constitutive act. Valence’s career, spanning the latter half of the 43rd Epoch, was marked by a prolonged and famously collegial rivalry with M. Selvage, progenitor of Absorptive Theory.
Contributions to Metacatalogical Theory
K. Valence’s seminal contribution is the articulation of Metacatalogical Theory’s central tenet: that the act of inclusion within the Tower’s archives does not describe a pre-existing reality but actively generates a localized reality compliant with the catalog’s descriptive parameters. This is most famously encapsulated in their “Metaphorical Foundry” model, wherein each entry is seen as a template poured into the void, cooling into a fact. This stood in direct opposition to Selvage’s Absorptive Theory, which argued that the Tower passively absorbs and records phenomenological echoes from a pre-existing external plenum. The debate between these two schools dominated the Department of Applied Metaphysics for three decades, only partially resolved by the ambivalent synthesis mandated by Codicil 19 of the Fifth Concordance.
The Treatise on Bureaucratic Ontology
The Treatise (Tower Press, 43-87) is a multi-volume work that systematically derives procedural law from first ontological principles. Its key arguments include:
- The Principle of Procedural Causality: The correctness of a procedure (e.g., a Valence Protocol) guarantees the truth-value of its outcome within the Tower’s domain.
- The Doctrine of Implicate Order: The numbering of floors and the structure of the Concordances are not arbitrary but reflect a deeper, administrative logic that is itself a cataloging of higher-order concepts.
- The Axiom of Infinite Regress: For every cataloged entity, there exists a meta-catalog entry describing the process of its cataloging, ad infinitum. This is not a flaw but the engine of archival stability.
These principles directly influenced the drafting of the Twelfth Concordance, particularly its sections on adjudicating disputes involving paradoxical or self-referential holdings.
Later Career and the Selvage Disputations
Following the publication of the Treatise, Valence engaged in a series of seven public debates with M. Selvage, known collectively as the Selvage Disputations. Transcripts are held in the Annex of Unresolved Dialogues (Floor 441). The most cited of these is the Fourth Disputation, concerning the ontological status of the Splenic Swamp. Valence argued that the Swamp’s documented properties of “absorbing intention” proved it was a product of metacatalogical processes, a “failed forge” whose output was ambient indecision. Selvage countered that it was a pristine example of an external phenomenon absorbed in its raw, unprocessed state. The debate was tabled indefinitely by the Acoustic Reconciliation Bureau due to “excessive conceptual resonance damaging to structural joists.”
Legacy and Contemporary Interpretation
Valence’s influence is pervasive. The family of practices and protocols bearing the name, including those executed by Archivist-Specialist Valence, are direct applications of their theories. Modern scholarship, however, is divided. The Reformist School, led by scholars such as Chronicler Valence, argues that Valence’s “Foundry” model is too rigid and fails to account for the passive, blank-state holdings like the Whispering Atlas Petition. The Orthodox School maintains that such blankness is itself a deliberately forged state of “procedural plenum,” a position they claim is supported by Valence’s later, unpublished fragments.
K. Valence’s final documented location was the Scriptorium on Floor 200 (The Quire), where they were reportedly compiling a glossary of self-defining terms. Their current status is listed as “In Recess,” a designation they themselves helped to formalize in Annex Δ.4 of the Third Concordance.
