The Theory of Coalescent Fragments is an archival praxis positing that incomplete or contradictory records, when placed in sustained formal proximity, will spontaneously generate a coherent secondary narrative. This emergent narrative, termed a coalescence, is accorded full catalogical status, distinct from its source fragments. The theory is governed by Annex 4 of the Fifteenth Concordance and is a foundational principle for the operations of the Intake and Provisional Shelving bureaus.

Core Principles

The theory rests on three axiomatic principles. First, the Principle of Vacant Causality: any gap in a documented sequence exerts a "narrative suction," pulling explanatory material from adjacent informational fields. Second, the Principle of Sympathetic Juxtaposition: fragments sharing a minimum of two categorical tags (e.g., "pre-Omega," "cephalopod," "judicial") will, over a determinable period, exchange latent thematic elements. Third, the Principle of Coalescent Integrity: the resulting narrative, once manifested, exhibits an internal consistency and resistance to re-fragmentation that exceeds the sum of its parts. This final principle is often summarized by the maxim, "A coalescence, once formed, forgets it was ever broken."

Operational Protocols

The manual Procedures for Induced Coalescence (Concordance 15, Annex 4-B) details the approved methodologies. Standard practice involves depositing candidate fragments into a designated Coalescence Alcove for a period not less than seven archival cycles. Alcoves are lined with a substrate of compacted Residual Freedom folios, which are believed to provide a neutrally fertile medium. Following the incubation period, a Registrar certified in Coalescent Protocols administers a standard battery of coherence probes. If a stable secondary narrative is detected, a Form RV-9: Emergent Narrative Declaration is filed, and the new entity is assigned its own catalog number, superseding but not invalidating the source fragments.

Notable Coalescences

The most frequently cited example is the Chronicle of the Twice-Silent Bell, which coalesced from three unrelated fragments: a requisition for copper alloy, a disciplinary note regarding a Librarian's unauthorized humming, and a water-stain on a map of the Splenic Swamp. The resulting chronicle, now shelved at Floor 7,302, narrates the founding of a now-lost guild of mutes who communicated via resonant strikes upon a bell that produced no audible sound. Other significant coalescences include the Apocryphal Dietaries of the Glass-Gilled Salamander and the Interdicted Travelogue of Stairwell Theta-Epsilon.

Relationship to Other Theories

The Theory of Coalescent Fragments is often discussed in tandem with, and sometimes in opposition to, Dialogic Seed Theory. While Dialogic Seed Theory concerns the intentional "weaving" of new structures from curated conceptual seeds, Coalescence is understood as a spontaneous, bottom-up process. Proponents of the Absorptive Theory argue that Coalescence is merely a special case of absorption, where the "absent" information is supplied by neighboring fragments rather than by structural necessity. This view is contested by the School of Particulars, which maintains that the emergent narrative in a coalescence contains novel particulars irreducible to any source.

Controversies and Amendments

The primary doctrinal dispute concerns the ontological status of coalescent narratives. The Manifestational School holds they are genuinely new entities, created ex nihilo by archival pressures. The conservative Metacatalogical position, as articulated in the now-suppressed Addendum 15-4-γ, argues they are merely pre-existing catalogical entities, previously misplaced, whose signatures are finally being read correctly. This debate directly impacts shelving permanence; Manifestationalists advocate for new primary shelving, while Metacatalogists recommend re-filing under a revised sigil of the purported original entity. The Concordances themselves are inconsistent: the Seventh Concordance implies support for the Manifestational view in its clauses on Registrar operations, while the Kettleman Copy of the Seventeenth Concordance contains marginalia heavily favoring the Metacatalogical interpretation.

Modern Applications

Beyond standard fragment processing, the theory is applied in the maintenance of the Official Latent Atlas, where thematic lacunae are intentionally seeded with contradictory reports to stimulate narrative growth. It also informs the design of Sympathetic Resonance Engines, where harmonic imbalances are sometimes rectified by introducing "dissonant" fragment-logs into the resonance chamber, with the expectation that a stable, operational harmonic will coalesce. The theory remains a required subject for advancement within the Chronometry Guild, due to its implications for reconciling fractured temporal records.
