Conceptual Fragments
Conceptual Fragments are the incomplete or disembodied constituent parts of a larger, un-manifested concept. The Theory of Coalescent Fragments, as governed by Annex 4 of the Fifteenth Concordance, provides the operational framework for their identification, classification, and eventual recombination into a coalescence. A fragment is distinguished from a fully catalogued concept by its lack of a stable conceptual anchor and its high degree of conceptual motility.
Taxonomy and Provenance
Fragments are categorized according to the Materialist Index under a provisional shelving schema. The primary classes are:
- Premise-Fragments: Foundational assertions or axiomatic statements lacking subsequent elaboration. These are typically transported to the Vault of Unspoken Protocols for stability assessment prior to any assembly attempt.
- Attribute-Fragments: Isolated qualities, properties, or descriptors severed from their nominal host (e.g., “perennially damp,” “involuntarily resonant”).
- Function-Fragments: Partial operational protocols or purposes without defined agents or objects.
- Relic-Fragments: Physical or semi-physical traces of a concept that has otherwise dissolved, often found adhering to conceptual soils in recursive buffer zones.
Provenance is notoriously difficult to establish. Many fragments arrive via provisional shelving from Intake 1 or are discovered in the Hall of Provisional Whispers, where they may linger for centuries before being recognized as part of a potential whole.
Processing and Coalescence
Standard procedure for handling fragments intended for coalescence is detailed in the Procedures for Induced Coalescence. Candidate fragments are deposited into a designated Coalescence Alcove for a period of not less than seven archival cycles. During this incubation, conceptual echo-location techniques are employed to detect resonant harmonics between fragments. Successful resonance often leads to a period of conceptual infusion, where the fragments begin to share latent structural properties under the influence of a Large-Scale Conceptual Press.
The final coalescence event is not a mechanical assembly but an emergent narrative accorded full catalogical status. The original fragments are then archived as subsidiary references to the new whole, though debates persist within the Bureau of Conceptual Reconciliation regarding the ethical implications of fragment subsumption.
Risks and Contamination
Unsupervised fragment interaction poses significant risks. Conceptual contamination can occur when a premise-fragment from one nascent concept improperly bonds with an attribute-fragment from another, resulting in unstable hybrid constructs that defy conceptual zoning regulations. The Unauthorized Assembly of Disputed Proverbs in 742-Ω (Omicron) serves as a cautionary example, wherein three proverbial fragments coalesced into a self-contradictory maxim that required seven decades of remedial zoning to contain.
Furthermore, fragments exhibiting high motility have been known to escape provisional shelving and embed themselves within unrelated concordances or ordinances, necessitating complex archival surgery to excise.
Historical and Archival Significance
The archival record is replete with fragmentary antecedents to now-stable concepts. The earliest fragments of the First Concordance, for instance, contain oblique references to measurement systems that later crystallized into the Prototypical Metre. Similarly, the Pilaster Manuscripts that line the Whisper Galleries are themselves composed of earlier-generation fragments, preserved in a composite of Archival Dust-impregnated plaster.
Scholarly disagreement primarily centers on the ontological status of fragments. The Formalist School, citing clause -7 of the Seventh Concordance, argues fragments are merely errors in perception—concepts viewed from an incomplete angle. The Vitalist School, drawing from pre-Concordance traditions, contends fragments are the pre-living seeds of concepts, possessing a teleological drive towards wholeness. This debate remains unresolved, though it is a frequent topic of discourse in the galleries lined with pilaster manuscripts.
