Shadow Catalogues

MS 5683.03 · Documents and ordinances

Shadow Catalogues are a class of procedural manuals and reference lexicons used within The Tower for the identification, measurement, and classification of non-standard photic phenomena. Governed by a subset of the Concordances known as the Photometric Protocols, these catalogues serve as the primary administrative instrument for the Librarians in managing holdings related to Shadow Dissonance, Shadows Without Object, and associated anomalies.

Authority and Scope

The foundational authority for Shadow Catalogues is derived from Concordance 14, Clause 7 (On the Enumeration of Absent Light), which mandates the systematic recording of all photic deficits that exhibit "persistent formal adherence despite ontological ambiguity." This clause delegates cataloguing procedures to the Clerks of the Sundial, who operate the Hall of Luminous Absences on Floor 719, also known as the Penumbral Atrium. The scope of a Shadow Catalogue is strictly defined: it must contain, at minimum, a taxonomic key, a measurement rubric adhering to The Ninety-Degree Shadow Rule, and a cross-reference to associated physical specimens housed in repositories such as the Shadow Annex.

Standard Volumes

Three core catalogues are considered standard issue for any Librarian engaged in photic archival work.

  • The Index of Cast Deficits (7th Edition): Focuses on shadows with identifiable, though often transient or paradoxical, source objects. It includes extensive appendices on Warm Shadows and Imperfect Silhouettes.
  • The Register of Autonomous Silhouettes: Dedicated to Shadows Without Object, this volume is updated biannually following the review of the Fifth Spiral committee. Specimen S-WO-1, relocated after Incident 88-Gamma, is its primary case study.
  • The Manual of Dissonant Metrics: Provides the operational frameworks for quantifying Shadow Dissonance, including calibration procedures for the light sources in the Spire of Unfinished Catalogues' northern aspect, historically used to induce Kairologos.

Provisional and Speculative Entries

In accordance with The Precept of Unwritten Catalogues, a Shadow Catalogue must maintain sections for Provisional Numbering and Speculative Cataloguing. Provisional entries are assigned to phenomena under active observation but not yet fully stabilized, such as the class of disputed Memory Shadows. Speculative entries, marked by a sigma (σ) prefix, catalogue hypothetical or formally deduced shadows that have not yet been observed, a practice deeply informed by Metacatalogical Theory. The Office of Volumetric Nomenclature audits these sections triennially to approve transfers to the standard volumes or mandate relegation to appendices.

Disputes and Revisions

Shadow Catalogues are perpetually contested documents. The most significant ongoing dispute concerns the taxonomic placement of Root Shadows. The Clerks of the Spiral argue vehemently that phenomena like The Straw's Shadow represent a severe subspecies of Root Shadow and should be catalogued accordingly, a position contradicted by the Sundial Clerks' insistence on a separate "dissonance-origin" category. These conflicts result in frequent, and often contradictory, amendments. For instance, the measurement protocol for edge-softening in Annex B of the Manual of Dissonant Metrics was revised twelve times between 719-03-45 and 719-04-12, each revision citing a different sub-clause of Concordance 14.

Physical Form and Distribution

Authorized Shadow Catalogues are bound in a light-absorbent felt manufactured only on Floor 719, which prevents the books from casting shadows of their own—a requirement stipulated to avoid observational interference. Distribution is limited to librarians who have completed Primary Verification for photic subjects. Unauthorized duplication or the creation of derivative catalogues is prohibited under Concordance 14, Clause 22, though several unsanctioned "Grey Lexicons" are known to circulate among researchers in the lower spirals, complicating archival consistency.
