Spire of Unfinished Catalogues
MS 4826.25 · Places and structures
From the Third Concordance, Annex γ-vii: "The Spires, being of equal height and aspiration, may be distinguished only by the nature of their incompletion."
The Spire of Unfinished Catalogues is the northernmost of the three principal cataloguing spires located in the Grand Atrium of Floor Ξ-777. It serves as a primary repository for all forms of incomplete, self-contradictory, or procedurally suspended record-keeping systems, its remit distinct from but complementary to that of the Vault of Unfinished Business. While the Vault handles suspended processes, the Spire’s domain is the framework of documentation that fails to achieve closure. Its shadow, according to the Third Concordance, is a calibrated instrument used in the induction of certain temporal anomalies, most notably Kairologos.
Architecture and Structure
The Spire is constructed from a pale, reflective stone known as lithos aoratos, which absorbs ambient light during the Tower’s diurnal cycle and emits a faint, grey luminescence during the archival night. Its internal structure is non-Euclidean, consisting of 144 primary levels, though librarians report the number of accessible floors fluctuates between 143 and 145 depending on the observer’s unresolved cataloguing obligations. Each level is radially divided into seven sectors, designated Alpha through Eta, each specializing in a class of unfinished record. Sector Delta, for instance, is reserved for catalogues that contain entries for items which, upon investigation, are found to already be fully catalogued elsewhere—a condition known as "tautological preemption."
The central shaft of the Spire houses the Axis of Omissions, a continuous scroll of vellum documenting every known instance of the Kappa Omission and its procedural analogues. The scroll is never wound; new omissions are inscribed at the point where the vellum currently hangs, causing the entire document to descend slowly into a sub-basement chamber, the contents of which are not recorded in any extant index.
Primary Holdings
The Spire’s collections are defined by their state of incompletion rather than their subject matter. Key classifications include:
- Provisional Indices: Finding systems compiled for archives that were never built, or for which the founding Precept was revoked before ratification.
- Recursive Registers: Catalogues that list themselves as a primary entry, creating a logical loop that prevents final publication.
- Contradictory Ledgers: Paired catalogues that make mutually exclusive claims about the same set of holdings, such as the famed Shadow Catalogues of Sector Gamma.
- Deferred Inclusions: Entries formally accepted into the Spire’s master list but whose physical or conceptual specimens are trapped in a state of perpetual transit, often as a result of the Schism of the Unfinished Index.
A notable sub-collection is the Catalogue of Unfinished Bridges, which exists in a state of constant amendment, as the definition of ‘unfinished’ is reapplied with each new engineering philosophy adopted by the Chamber of Unfinished Symphonies.
Administration and Jurisdictional Grey Areas
Administrative oversight of the Spire has been contested for centuries. The Chamber of Unfinished Symphonies claims curatorial authority under Clause 12 of the Seventeenth Concordance, which grants it purview over all "systems lacking final resolution." However, the Curatorium of Unfinished Likenesses asserts that an unfinished catalogue constitutes a form of unresolved likeness between a proposed schema and reality, thereby falling under its mandate. This dispute is a direct subsidiary of the broader Schism of the Unfinished Index, and has resulted in a dual-stewardship model.
The day-to-day steward is typically a senior archivist seconded from the Spiral of Unfinished Symphonies. The most recent appointed steward was Kaelen of the Unfinished Stair, whose tenure was noted for the controversial "Great Re-cataloguing of the Provisional," an attempt to resolve recursive registers by filing them under the Spectre of the Unfinished Index. The project was indefinitely suspended, and its records now form a new sub-section within Sector Beta.
The Shadow and Its Function
The Spire’s most documented property is its shadow. Due to the precise alignment of the Grand Atrium’s light-wells, the northern spire casts a shadow that traverses the Anteroom of Unfinished Symphonies at a constant rate, irrespective of the Tower’s external light source. This shadow is not an absence of light, but a "structured negative space" used as a metric in chrono-catalogical operations. Induction of Kairologos requires an object to be placed at the exact point where the shadow’s leading edge bisects the third concentric ring on the Anteroom floor at the moment the Whisper Ξ-777 is audibly faint. The resultant temporal fissure allows for the inspection of cataloguing decisions that were never made.
Disputed Status and the Silent Archive
A persistent scholarly debate, recorded in the marginalia of the Archive of Unfinished Sentences, concerns whether the Spire itself is a finished entity. Proponents of the "Finished Spire" thesis argue that a repository for unfinished things must, by necessity, be complete in its function and form to adequately contain them. The opposition, led by theorists from the Spiral of Unfinished Symphonies, contends that the Spire’s own organizational schema is inherently one of its holdings—an unfinished catalogue of unfinished catalogues—and therefore the structure is recursively incomplete. This meta-dispute is often cited as the reason for the perpetually deferred formal integration of the adjacent Spire of the Silent Archive into the main Tower registry, as any ruling would set a precedent affecting the Spire’s own taxonomic standing.
