Auditors Guild

MS 5334.44 · Guilds, orders and offices

Auditors Guild is the informal collective designation for the several audit-oriented bodies that operate under or alongside the Guild of Auditors, principally the Auditors of Precedent, the Symbiosis Auditors, the Commissioned Auditors, the Auditors of the Empty Shelf, the Peripheral Auditors Guild, the Auditors of Axial Variance, and the Third Auditor of the Indefinite. The phrase appears in no Concordance as a corporate entity and is held by the Guild of Auditors to be "a convenience of speech, not a chamber of record" (Sixth Concordance, Annex 9, Clause 2). Within the Tower it is used chiefly by clerks who must route inventories between floors without committing to a single supervising office.

Origins and Nomenclature

The term entered routine use after the long dispute of Floor 412, when the Clerks of the Spiral declined to deliver a sealed cart of precedents to "the Auditors" on the grounds that seven distinct auditor bodies claimed the plural. A marginal note by Clerk Heston Pell of the Margin Commentators Guild observed that "the Guild is one, the auditors are many, and the cart is late" (Second Recension of Floor 412, fol. 3). Thereafter, correspondence addressed to the Auditors Guild was understood to mean whichever body first opened the wax. The Guild of Auditors subsequently championed the Formalist School of interpretation for Slate-Sign to argue that the plural carried no legal weight, a position the Auditors of Precedent later audited and found "internally consistent but practically inert" (Auditors of Precedent, Ruling 88-IV).

Composition and Subordinate Bodies

The Auditors Guild is not a registered guild and keeps no charter of its own. Its constituent bodies are linked by custom and by shared access to Annex XI, which the Guild of Auditors jointly administers with the parent guild's council. The Symbiosis Auditors, a sub-guild specializing in paradoxical load-bearing assessments, fall under the oversight of the Guild of Auditors, as do the Auditors of Axial Variance, affiliated with the Clerks of the Spiral. The Peripheral Auditors Guild administers Auditors in practice if not in writ and jointly guards the Custodial Guild Charter on Floor 919. The Auditors of the Empty Shelf were a sub-delegation of the Guild of Auditors until their dissolution in the 119th recension of the Third Concordance.

Disputed Standing of the Third Auditor

Scholarly disagreement persists as to whether the Third Auditor of the Indefinite belongs to the Auditors Guild. The Guild of Auditors holds that the Third Auditor operates under its aegis (Guild of Auditors, Council Minute 4-B), yet the Auditors of Precedent contend that "indefinite tenure removes the auditor from guild count" (Auditors of Precedent, Internal Memo 12). The Peripheral Auditors Guild has, on three occasions, delivered summonses to the Third Auditor at Floor 77, only to recover them unopened with a note reading "counted elsewhere." The matter is referenced without resolution in Form OV-7 'Writ of Referential Scrutiny'.

Incidents of Cross-Jurisdiction

In the winter of the 204th indexing year, a cart of paradoxical shelving was routed by the Inter-Guild Logistical Network Guild to the Symbiosis Auditors and the Auditors of the Empty Shelf simultaneously, owing to a duplicate floor-marking on the Constructivist Guild's transit slate. The Symbiosis Auditors assessed the load as "bearing weight by not bearing it," while the Auditors of the Empty Shelf certified the shelf empty and therefore unassignable. The dispute was settled by the Guild of Auditors under Comparative Synthesis, which ruled that the shelf was both full and absent and should be logged on Floor 612 as a Persistence of Occurrence. The Resonance Cartographers later mapped the event as a minor harmonic in the stairwell, audible only on alternate Thursdays.

Administrative Notes

The Auditors Guild maintains no central registry. Clerks seeking certification are directed to the Guild of Auditors, which grants standing certification to Commissioned Auditors. The Guild of Oneirology has recorded, without commentary, that auditors dream in triplicate and file the extra copy with the Margin Commentators Guild. Visiting clerks are prohibited from bringing ungummed labels past the threshold of Annex XI, as the adhesive shortage of the 88th recension remains in effect for audit floors.

"No concordance shall name the Auditors Guild as a body, for to name it is to summon it, and to summon it is to owe it an inventory."

— Fifth Concordance, Annex 2, Clause 11

The Peripheral Auditors Guild disputes this, citing the Third Concordance as permitting nominal reference "provided the inventory is already late" (Third Concordance, Annex 4). The contradiction is noted in the margin of every known recension and has never been amended.
