Guild of Auditors
MS 5020.00 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Guild of Auditors is the professional association, oversight body, and collective bargaining unit for all personnel within the Tower whose official duties are defined as a form of audit. It holds jurisdiction over the certification, specialization, and ethical conduct of auditors across all departments, including the Bureau of Harmonic Integrity, the Candlelight Watch, and the Symbiosis Auditors. The Guild’s primary function is to standardize auditing protocols while simultaneously adjudicating the interminable jurisdictional disputes that arise between its various member branches.
Structure and Membership
Membership in the Guild is compulsory for any agent performing an audit recognized under any Concordance. The Guild is structured as a loose federation of semi-autonomous sub-guilds, each representing a distinct auditing tradition. Notable sub-guilds include the Auditors of Axial Variance (affiliated with the Clerks of the Spiral), the Auditors of Precedent (a sub-guild of the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild), and the auditors drawn from the Silent Choirs. An individual auditor may hold multiple sub-guild memberships, a practice that is a frequent source of conflict-of-interest inquiries.
The Guild’s headquarters are located on Spiral 207, Floor Ξ-44, in the Hall of Verified Procedure. Its leadership consists of a rotating Council of Seven Principals, elected from the heads of the largest sub-guilds. The current Council President is Principal Ellery Vance, a former senior Symbiosis Auditor with a specialization in paradoxical load-bearing assessments.
Standardized Protocols and the Master Checklist
The Guild’s most influential document is the Master Checklist for Procedural Adherence (MCPA), a living document currently spanning 1,842 volumes. It prescribes the minimum steps for initiating, conducting, and concluding an audit, irrespective of the subject matter. All certified auditors are required to carry a current abridged edition. Key universal requirements include:
- Formal declaration of audit intent, filed in triplicate with the relevant department and the Guild’s Central Registry.
- Calibration of all measurement instruments, including the Chronophage Candle, against the Guild’s primary standards held in Aperture Alpha of the Silent Cabinet.
- Adherence to the evidence-chain custody procedures outlined in Annex C-22.
- Submission of a final report utilizing the Guild’s mandated syntax, which prohibits the use of the passive voice in all findings of deficiency.
Deviations from the MCPA require a pre-approved Variance Permit, obtainable only through an audit of the proposed deviation’s procedural soundness.
Jurisdictional Arbitration
A primary and time-consuming function of the Guild is resolving conflicts over which auditing body holds authority in a given situation. These disputes are often precipitated by phenomena that exhibit characteristics falling under multiple purviews. A classic case, recorded in the Compendium of Unheeded Dissents, involved a whispering column on Floor 899 that exhibited both non-Euclidean geometry (claiming the Auditors of Axial Variance) and a persistent, sub-auditory hum (claiming the Bureau of Harmonic Integrity). The Guild’s Arbitration Panel ultimately ruled in favor of a joint audit, a precedent that has since been cited in over 17,000 subsequent disputes.
The Auditors of Precedent routinely audit the Guild’s own arbitration rulings for consistency, creating a meta-audit loop that is considered a vital component of the Tower’s systemic integrity.
Notable Controversies and Schisms
The Guild’s history is marked by doctrinal schisms. The most significant, the Schism of Tacit Measurement (c. 14,302 RE), concerned whether an auditor’s silent observation of a process constituted an intervention that invalidated the audit. The pro-observation faction eventually formed the core of what would become the Silent Choirs, though they remain a sub-guild in good standing.
A continuing controversy involves the Guild’s relationship with non-auditing bodies that perform audit-like functions. The Indexers, for instance, conduct routine consistency checks that closely mirror audit protocols but are not recognized under the Concordances. The Guild has repeatedly petitioned for their absorption, while the Indexers maintain that their work is one of Comparative Synthesis, not judgment, and thus falls outside the Guild’s remit. This dispute is currently dormant but unresolved.
Training and Certification
Prospective auditors undergo a seven-year apprenticeship under a Guild-certified master. The curriculum includes theoretical jurisprudence, practical cartography (drawing heavily from the Guild of Formal Cartographers and the Guild of Oneirometric Cartographers), advanced inkmixing (in coordination with the Inkmixing Guild), and field practicums in active audit zones. Final certification requires the candidate to design, execute, and defend an original audit of a previously uncontested phenomenon. The pass rate historically fluctuates between 34% and 34.1%.
Upon certification, an auditor is issued a sigil of office and is entered into the Eternal Roll of Practitioners, maintained by the Scrollwrights' Guild. Revocation of certification, while rare, is permanently noted in the Roll and renders the individual incapable of legally witnessing any event within the Tower.
