Third Auditor of the Indefinite
MS 9078.26 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Third Auditor of the Indefinite is a procedural officer authorized to issue provisional seals for access to holdings categorized under indefinite progression or unfinalized states, most notably the Vault of Unfinalized Sums. The position operates under the aegis of the Guild of Auditors but derives its specific mandate from Annex Δ of the Tenth Concordance, which governs "the authentication of processes pertaining to subjects without terminus."
Jurisdiction and Function
The Third Auditor's primary function is to attest to the procedural validity of engagements with systems that are, by definition, incomplete. This includes audits of looping inventories, assessments of recursively self-modifying catalogues, and the authorization of entry into vaults where the final sum is perpetually pending. The most frequent application of this authority is the issuance of the provisional seal required for any Scholar or Librarian to access the Vault of Unfinalized Sums, as per Clause 19(b) of the Tenth Concordance. The seal is not a judgment on the contents but a certification that the attempt to engage with the indefinite has been correctly initiated.
The Auditor's title—"Third"—refers not to a hierarchy but to the third perspective mandated by the Tripartite Warrant model: the Observer defines the scope, the Archivist records the attempt, and the Auditor certifies the absence of procedural violation at the moment of inception. A Third Auditor, therefore, works exclusively at this point of inception for indefinite subjects.
Appointment and Oversight
Appointment is made by the Registrar of Mobile Assets, to which the Department of Provisional Holdings transferred oversight of 'objects of indefinite progression' in Year 89. Candidates must have served as a full Auditor for a minimum of seven years and must demonstrate a facility with paradoxical logic, often tested via the Contest of Contradiction. The current officeholder is not a matter of public record, as per the Doctrine of Omitted Designation (Tenth Concordance, Annex Δ, Clause 4). Oversight is provided by the Spiral Auditor-General, whose offices are in Spiral 7.
The Vance Dissent and Its Implications
The role was significantly clarified by the landmark dissent filed by Elara Vance in Year 132. Auditor Vance argued that a subject whose defining property is its own active negation cannot satisfy the emotional prerequisites for coherence or Grace, and thus any audit of such a subject is fundamentally an audit of the attempt to audit. This established the Vance Threshold, which directly informs the Third Auditor's purview: they audit the procedural shell of the engagement, not the substantive (and likely paradoxical) content within.
Vance's dissent, which led to the creation of the Vance Dread-Cluster as a pedagogical tool, underscored that the Third Auditor must operate with "productive indifference," a stance later codified into the Doctrine of Productive Stasis.
Operational Protocols
The Auditor's work is governed by the Protocols of Cessation, specifically Protocol 12, which outlines the ceremony of "Sealing the Attempt." The process involves three silent witnesses, the incantation of the relevant catalogue references (which must be spoken backwards), and the application of a wax seal that cools but never fully hardens. All tools used during the sealing ceremony are considered Temporary Permanencies and must be sequestered afterward under Ordinance 73-C.
Controversies and Scholarly Dispute
A persistent debate, recorded in the Scroll of Unresolved Annotations (Vol. 44), concerns whether the Third Auditor of the Indefinite can audit their own authorization process. Proponents, citing the recursive nature of the role, argue it is a necessary reflexivity. Opponents, led by the ghost-argument of Ellery Vance's early memos, contend it would create a paradox that collapses the procedural shell the office is designed to maintain. The Concordances offer no resolution; the Third Concordance implies a necessity for self-audit in indefinite systems, while a later amendment to the Tenth Concordance expressly forbids it. This contradiction is typically managed by the Auditor recusing themselves in favor of a counterpart from a non-adjacent Spiral.
Further operational friction occurs with the Registrar of Mobile Assets, which maintains that indefinite progression implies motion and thus falls under its remit, while the Guild of Auditors asserts that progression is a conceptual, not physical, state. This jurisdictional grey area is often resolved through Sequestering of the subject in question, typically to the Vault of Irreconcilable Holdings or the Floor of Silent Bells, until a concordance can be amended.
Notable Affiliated Holdings
Beyond the Vault of Unfinalized Sums, the Third Auditor's provisional seal is required for:
- Review of any ledger listed on the Master Roll of Primary Registrants that contains a so-called "Vance anomaly."
- Initiation of a deep-stack retrieval from archives known to employ paradoxical indexing.
- Authorization for a Silent Scribe to transcribe a conversation that has not yet occurred.
- Inspection of any chamber in the Lower Reaches designated as "temporally ambiguous."
