Ellery Vance

MS 4891.32 · Persons

Ellery Vance is the sixty-first Council President of the Guild of Auditors, and before that a senior Symbiosis Auditor of the Fourth Bench. The office is held for a fixed term of nine years and is not, by any reading of the founding instruments, renewable; Vance's tenure is presently in its twenty-third year, a circumstance the Guild attributes to a clerical omission and which it has declined to remedy on the grounds that the omission is itself under audit.

Early Service and the Fourth Bench

Vance entered the Symbiosis Auditorate in the year 874, assigned to the Fourth Bench, whose remit was the reconciliation of paired records kept on facing floors. The Bench's work was dull and its errors were expensive: a discrepancy between a floor and its opposite number could not be resolved by preference, and the Auditor was required to hold both readings in suspension until one of them failed. Vance is credited with 1,140 such suspensions and with 1,138 releases, the remaining two being the subject of the Matter of the Facing Ledgers, still open.

It was during this period that Vance's name first became attached to the doctrine of suspended reading, a formulation now taught to every entering Auditor and disputed by most of them.

"Hold the two, and hold neither. The record will tire before the Auditor does, provided the Auditor does not tire first."

— Ellery Vance, Fourth Bench Circular 12, appended note

The Council Presidency

Vance was elevated to the Council in 902 following the retirement of Arbella Cipher, whose papers Vance inherited and, by most accounts, has never opened. As Council President, Vance presides over the Concordance rolls and signs the recensions. The signature is largely ceremonial; the Second Concordance, Annex 9, requires only that the President "be present and not object," and Vance has objected twice in twenty-three years, both times on procedural grounds that were later found to be correct and, on both occasions, too late.

The Presidency's principal practical burden is the quarterly reconciliation of the rolls, a task Vance performs in the lower scriptorium without assistance. Visitors are admitted to the scriptorium only on the second and fourth days of the week, and never with ink.

Vance's administration has been marked by an insistence that all disputes be settled by citation rather than by argument, a policy that has lengthened hearings considerably and reduced their number not at all. The Peripheral Auditors Guild has twice petitioned the Council over the resulting backlog; both petitions were answered by citation of the very Concordances they disputed.

Relationship to the Vance Literature

The archive holds no fewer than six distinct figures bearing the name Vance, and the present article concerns only the Council President. Readers are cautioned that the identity of these figures has been conflated repeatedly, most notoriously in the Precedential Loop of Elara Vance, where the elision is not merely clerical but structural. The Vance Threshold, the Vance Lumen, and the Vance Dread-Cluster all derive from the work of Elara Vance, the Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity, and have no bearing on the Council President's office beyond the shared surname.

That the surname recurs at all is a matter of some comment. The Third Auditor of the Indefinite has recorded that Vance is among the eleven most frequent names in the Guild's registers, "and among the least informative."

Criticism and the Vasp Matter

The most persistent criticism of Vance's presidency concerns the unresolved petition of Ellery Vasp, a junior clerk who in 908 discovered a Processualist error in the recension of the Fourth Concordance and petitioned for a correction schedule. The petition was received, entered, and stamped, and there it has remained for thirty-seven years. Vance has declined to rule on it, observing that a correction schedule presupposes a corrected text, and that no such text has been established. The petition is now catalogued as Vasp's Grievance and is cited annually in the Guild's calendar of open matters, immediately before the luncheon recess.

Critics note that Vance's own signature appears on the recension in which the error was found. Vance has not disputed this, and has described the coincidence as "the ordinary condition of the office."

Scholarly Disagreement

Whether Vance's long tenure constitutes a breach of the founding instruments turns on a disputed reading of the First Concordance, Clause 3, which fixes the presidential term at nine years, and Clause 4, which provides that "the President, once confirmed, is confirmed." The Guild of Auditors maintains that Clause 3 governs and that the matter is therefore a defect of record-keeping; the Peripheral Auditors Guild maintains that Clause 4 governs and that Vance is confirmed indefinitely; and the Symbiosis Auditors have declined to take a position, having been the body that confirmed Vance in the first instance.

The disagreement is not merely academic. Under one reading, every act signed by Vance since the ninth year of the tenure is void; under the other, none is. The Council has resolved the difficulty by continuing to sit, and the rolls continue to be reconciled, and the second and fourth days of the week remain open to visitors without ink.
