Speculative Aquaria
MS 1258.81 · Practices and doctrines
“No specimen is considered fully archived until its ecology is hypothesized.” — Grand Taxonomy, Principle of the Necessary Context, Clause 14b
Speculative Aquaria are specialized archival chambers, distinct from vivaria, designed for the housing, study, and curation of aquatic and semi-aquatic specimens whose existence is either hypothetical or ontologically dependent on their cataloguing. The practice falls under the purview of the Department of Speculative Biology, which considers it an extension of Floor Ecological theory into aqueous environments. The design, maintenance, and interpretation of Speculative Aquaria are governed by a complex series of ordinances, primarily Second Concordance Addendum 12, "On the Categorization of Unobserved Life," and the subsequent procedural guidelines laid out in the Third Concordance, Annex Γ, "Standards for Non-Terrestrial Habitats."
Structural and Ontological Design
A Speculative Aquarium is not merely a tank of water. It is a curated ontological framework. Each aquarium is constructed according to a detailed Habitat Proposal, which must be submitted to and sanctioned by the Department of Speculative Biology before construction can begin on an approved Utility or Archive Spire. The proposal must specify not only the physical parameters (salinity, pressure, light cycles, substrate composition) but also the intended conceptual niche the specimen is hypothesized to occupy.
For example, Aquarium 112-Δ-7 on Floor 112, Annex B maintains a perpetual twilight environment of chilled, mineral-rich freshwater to house the Lumenflector pallidus, a hypothesized bioluminescent placoderm whose reflective plates are posited to communicate via polarized light patterns—a phenomenon that has, per the curation logs, been observed on seventeen distinct occasions since its installation in Year 342 of the Current Cataloguing Era. The water itself is sourced from the condensation collectors on Floor 14,142, where the Department maintains its bioluminescent lichen cultures, creating a material and conceptual link between holdings.
The Principle of Plenitude and Curatorial Duty
The theoretical underpinning of the practice is derived from Speculative Cataloguing's Algernon's Theorem on Conceptual Plenitude, which argues that for any coherently described ecological niche within a logically consistent environment, a form of life to fill it must be considered potentially extant. The curator's duty is thus to render the environment sufficiently coherent and consistent to invite, or perhaps necessitate, the specimen's manifestation. This is often described as "holding the space for the possible."
This leads to the primary scholarly dispute within the field: the Problem of Agency. Does the act of curation summon the specimen, or does it merely reveal a specimen that was already latent within the Tower's structure? Proponents of the "Summoning Hypothesis" point to cases like the 'Ventilation Chorus', where cross-departmental interference was believed to have generated entirely new auditory phenomena. The "Revelatory School," which holds greater sway within the Department of Speculative Biology, cites the Grand Taxonomic principle that the Tower archives what is, not what is made; the aquarium, therefore, is a tool of discovery, not creation.
Notable Installations and Cross-Departmental Protocols
Beyond the standard research aquaria, several installations are of particular archival significance:
- The Stack of Open Argument (Annex ): While primarily a repository for unresolved dialectics, its western wing contains a series of linked, shallow brinescape pools used to model competing hypotheses of tidal-pool ecosystems. The dynamic, argument-based energy of the Stack is believed by some curators to influence the speculated behavioral patterns of the resident filter-feeders.
- The Department of Applied Metaphysics|Department of Applied Metaphysics's]] [[Sub-Basement Resonance Chamber|Resonance Chamber (Sub-Basement 7): A jointly maintained facility with the Department of Speculative Biology. This chamber houses aquaria tuned to specific harmonic frequencies, containing specimens whose very physicality is hypothesized to be a standing wave function. Access is strictly regulated under Third Concordance, Clause 408, due to the "unsettling implications for structural integrity."
- The Department of Sanctioned Melancholy's Reflective Pools: A series of dark, still basins on Floor 719. While not officially designated Speculative Aquaria, they share procedural guidelines. They are used to cultivate "attenuated phantasms of regret," which are treated as semi-aquatic ephemera for cataloguing purposes. The Department of Speculative Biology's relationship with Sanctioned Melancholy regarding these pools is codependent but tense, primarily concerning jurisdiction over lifeforms that exist primarily as emotional residues.
Maintenance and Decommissioning
Maintenance logs for a Speculative Aquarium are considered part of the specimen's core dossier. Fluctuations in water quality, unplanned symbioses with microbial cultures from other floors, and even the gradual erosion of viewing glass are meticulously recorded as potential data points regarding the specimen's interaction with—and definition within—its environment.
Decommissioning is a grave procedural matter. A Habitat Proposal can only be retired by a unanimous vote of a convened panel from the Department of Speculative Biology, following a finding that the hypothetical niche has been "conclusively disproven" or that the aquarium's continued operation poses a risk to "archival stability." The water and substrate are then transferred to a designated Liminal Reservoir on a non-public floor, and the physical space is re-sealed. The specimen's catalogue entry is amended to "Status: Hypothetical, Environment Retired," but never fully purged, in accordance with the Tower's principle that an idea, once shelved, retains a latent potential for reactivation.
