Status Beta (Speculative Holding)
MS 3927.88 · Practices and doctrines
Status Beta (Speculative Holding) is a provisional classification for physical holdings believed to be ontologically unstable or incomplete, pending review by the Committee for Ontological Review. Governed by Annex 7 of the Third Concordance's Clause 19, it is defined as “a holding whose primary existence is inferred from secondary effects, patterns of absence, or persistent conceptual frameworks, rather than direct physical verification.” Status Beta objects require continuous observation and are typically housed in designated Vestibules of Provisional Tenancy.
Definitional Criteria
The criteria for assigning Status Beta are enumerated in Opinion 442, In re: The Glimmering Vault. A holding must meet at least two of the following conditions:
- It exhibits measurable effects (e.g., temperature differentials, resonant frequencies, anomalous shadows) without a corresponding, fully-stable material source.
- Its catalog record in the Central Registry demonstrates “conceptual persistence”—resisting erasure or logical negation by standard archival protocols.
- It is the subject of a persistent, coherent, and cross-referenced body of ancillary documentation within the Tower, suggesting an underlying factual necessity.
- Its physical instantiation, if any, is non-Euclidean or recursively defined, placing it under the purview of Speculative Topology.
A holding meeting these criteria is marked with a Provisional Sigil (Ψ) and assigned to Status Beta by the intake clerks at Aperture Beta.
Administrative Protocols
Holdings under Status Beta are subject to Security Protocol Sigma-7 (“Speculative Containment”). This mandates bi-weekly integrity audits, a log of all secondary phenomena, and illumination levels compliant with Concordance 11’s requirements for speculative entities. Crucially, they are denied permanent shelf allocation until their status is resolved via a Scholastic Inquest. The Department of Speculative Biology maintains a dedicated Office of Speculative Reinforcements whose remit includes the stabilization of biological Status Beta holdings, such as those in the Speculative Aquaria.
Movement of Status Beta objects between floors requires a Form B-19 “Transfer of Ontological Weight,” co-signed by a Senior Librarian and a member of the Committee for Ontological Review. Unauthorized movement is a Class 3 infraction, as it risks “conceptual dilution” across non-adjacent Tiers.
Dispute and Precedent
The primary scholarly dispute surrounding Status Beta concerns its relationship to Status Alpha. While Status Alpha defers verification pending further evidence, Status Beta implies the evidence may never arrive in a conventional form; the holding’s reality is a product of systemic inference. Opinion 881, which affirmed the validity of The Whispering Gallery, established that “productive incompleteness” is sufficient grounds for maintaining Status Beta in perpetuity, a ruling that contradicts the Third Concordance’s implied preference for eventual resolution.
This has led to a faction, often called the “Resolutionists,” who argue that all Status Beta holdings should be scheduled for mandatory inquests every fifty years. Their opponents, the “Systemicists,” cite the stability of the Infinite Registry and the Sympathetic Resonance Engines as proof that sustained, managed speculation is a valid ontological state.
Notable Examples
- The Murmuring Column (Floor 199, Vestibule 12-G)
- A cylindrical space of cool, still air that transmits whispered conversations from unknown origins. Listed as Status Beta in 112-AL-44 due to its stable acoustic properties despite the absence of a confirmed sound source.
- The Atlas of Receding Borders
- A cartographic holding whose landmasses shrink by approximately 1mm per year along all coastlines when measured against the Standard Cartographic Grid. Its physical substrate shows no such erosion. Upheld as Status Beta in the Scholastic Inquest of 98-AQ-11.
- Specimen Δ-7 (“The Silent Bloom”)
- A floral structure maintained by the Office of Speculative Reinforcements. It exudes a potent fragrance associated with memory recall, yet possesses no discernible olfactory organs. It is catalogued under both Speculative Biology and Status Beta.
Progression and Resolution
Resolution of a Status Beta classification occurs in one of three ways: elevation to Fact-Status (per Clause 19), reclassification to Status Alpha (if direct verification becomes probable), or dissipation. Dissipation, recorded under Code Ω, occurs when the secondary effects cease and the holding’s conceptual persistence fails, resulting in its removal from the Registry and the reclamation of its vestibule space. As of the last decadal audit (120-BE-01), the ratio of elevations to dissipations stands at approximately 1:8, indicating that most Status Beta holdings remain permanently speculative.
