Beta Revisionists
MS 4931.61 · Practices and doctrines
Beta Revisionists are a philosophical-archival movement dedicated to the retroactive interpretation and strategic re-application of Class Beta: Logically or Physically Unattainable Directives. They are not a formal guild or chapter within the Librarian order but operate as a distributed school of thought, primarily within Aperture Beta. Their core tenet is that directives classified as Class Beta are not inert, but rather represent potentialities whose conditions for fulfillment may shift over time, requiring periodic "revision" of their ontological status.
Core Doctrine
The Beta Revisionists argue that the Class Beta Unbound Attribute is not merely a terminal administrative stamp, but a placeholder for future validation. They posit that the Tower’s architecture and the mutable nature of its internal catalogues can, through unforeseen topological shifts or procedural evolutions, create the conditions necessary for a previously "unattainable" directive to become attainable. Their foundational text, the Manifesto of Latent Attainability (colloquially, the Beta Manifesto), cites Concordance 88-A (Beta Clause) §4.7, which states, “A closed avenue may be reopened by a change in the ground, not the traveler.” Revisionists interpret “ground” as the total administrative and physical state of the Tower itself.
Their methodology involves the continuous audit of Class Beta holdings within the Central Registry, seeking correlations between directive language and recorded environmental anomalies within the Tower, such as the Resonant Phase of The Great Dampness. A directive deemed "physically unattainable" due to, for example, a stated requirement for "simultaneous presence in two non-adjacent spirals," might be flagged for re-evaluation following the discovery of a new, transient sympathetic resonance between those locations.
Operational Practices
Revisionist activity is concentrated in the review chambers adjacent to Tier Beta (Recursive), though they lack official standing in the classification review process. Their primary output is the Periodic Table of Revisions, a living document that assigns a "Potentiality Quotient" to select Class Beta directives. This quotient is a calculated index factoring in variables such as frequency of related anomalous reports, linguistic elasticity of the directive's phrasing, and historical precedent for status alteration in other directive classes.
Their most famous—and controversial—practical application involved Directive 117-: “Inventory the echoes in the Chamber of Unspoken Address.” Initially classified as Class Beta (Echoes being unquantifiable per Annex 3 of the Ordinatum of Standard Measures), Revisionists successfully petitioned for a provisional reclassification after correlating the directive with the cyclic hum of a Sympathetic Resonance Engine in Administrative Spiral Beta. The directive was temporarily re-designated Status Beta (Speculative) for a period of seventeen cycles, though it was ultimately returned to Class Beta after the investigative commission failed to establish a definitive countable echo.
Controversies and Opposition
The movement is staunchly opposed by the Formalist Archivists of The Infinite Registry, who maintain that Class Beta is a pure, logical category. They argue that revisionism introduces corrosive subjectivity into a system dependent on categorical rigor, calling it “the administrative equivalent of chasing one’s shadow down Stairwell Beta.” The Formalists cite Concordance 22-C, which explicitly states, “That which cannot be, is filed as such, eternally.”
A more peculiar opposition comes from the practitioners of Protocol Delta, who view the Revisionists’ linear, cause-and-effect model of attainability as naïve. Protocol Delta focuses on paradoxical navigation and holds that truly unattainable directives are often the most direct paths to elsewhere; to make them attainable, they argue, is to destroy their utility as ontological landmarks.
The Librarians have issued no unified stance on Revisionism. Individual administrators within Spiral 117, Aperture Beta have been known to quietly consult the Periodic Table of Revisions when faced with particularly vexing borderline cases, while others refuse to acknowledge its existence.
Notable Schisms
The movement has fractured into several branches. The Active Revisionists advocate for direct intervention to engineer the conditions for a directive’s fulfillment, a practice bordering on procedural heresy. The Passive-Observationalists believe only macro-scale shifts in the Tower’s nature, like a new Great Dampness, can legitimize reclassification. The most radical faction, the Oneiric Betaists, posit that the fulfillment of certain Class Beta directives occurs not in physical space, but within the collective administrative unconscious of the Tower’s clerks, and that documentation of this is itself a form of attainment. This faction was marginalized following the inconclusive and emotionally draining experiment to fulfill Directive Alpha-Omega: “Experience the sunset described in ledger Γ-7,” which led to a week-long epidemic of clerks staring blankly at walls.
Legacy and Influence
Despite their unofficial status, the Beta Revisionists have permanently altered the discourse surrounding unattainability within the Tower. The very concept of Status Beta (Speculative) is a direct result of their advocacy. Their work highlights the tension between the Tower as a static archive and the Tower as a living, mutable entity. As one Revisionist tract concludes, “The shelf is fixed, but the book may yet write itself.” Whether this is seen as profound insight or administrative romanticism depends largely on which spiral one calls home.
