Retroactive Contamination
MS 2051.24 · Practices and doctrines
Retroactive Contamination is the phenomenon wherein the procedural application of Retroactive Alignment causes unintended conceptual residues to bleed into adjacent, chronologically stable cataloguing frameworks. First formally documented in Annex Δ of Clause 3 (Retroactive Application), it is distinguished from Paradox Contamination by its origin in sanctioned archival practice rather than spontaneous ontological rupture.
Mechanism and Detection
The process arises when a Retroactive Anomaly is reconciled to the primary timeline. The alignment, while securing axiomatic coherence, does not perfectly contain the displaced conceptual matter. This excess, termed "Drift-Sheen" by the Retroactive School, adheres to nearby catalogue entries, manifests as phantom cross-references, or induces mild cases of Retroactive Numeracy in personnel handling the aligned records. Detection is performed using a calibrated Type-2 Laminar Flow Gauge, which measures not the drift itself, but the faint harmonic oscillations in the archival substrate left in its wake.
Classification System
Retroactive Contamination is categorized under a parallel but distinct schema from paradox-based incidents.
- Class R-1 (Ephemeral): Contamination that dissipates within 72 hours, often presenting as temporary footnote inaccuracies or shelving miscues. Considered a routine occupational hazard.
- Class R-2 (Persistent): Contamination that embeds itself into catalogue metadata, requiring a formal Revision Order from a presiding Librarian. The Beta Revisionists often petition to study these cases in situ.
- Class R-3 (Migratory): Contamination that propagates to unrelated holdings via sympathetic cataloguing principles. This class mandates the establishment of a Recursive Buffer Zone and falls under the purview of a Paradox Warden.
A disputed subtype, R-2Δ (Conceptual Seepage), blurs the line with Conceptual Contamination and is the subject of ongoing doctrinal review.
Procedural Protocols
Standard mitigation is outlined in Concordance 17.4. The primary tool is "Re-gilding": the application of a countervailing narrative lacquer to the affected holdings, stabilizing their semantic borders. The treatise On Retroactive Precedence argues that Re-gilding itself can, over sufficient iterations, become a source of contamination, a position contested by the Materialist Chapter. All procedures require a Triple Witness Protocol to prevent the contamination from altering the record of its own containment.
Notable Instances
- The Halberd Incident (Floor 44, circa )
- The retroactive creation of "The Seventh Halberdier of the Silent Guard" resulted in R-3 contamination across seventeen floors of military histories. Each affected text spontaneously included a detailed, yet contradictory, biography for the halberdier. Containment required seven years of Re-gilding and the temporary re-designation of an entire wing as a Recursive Buffer Zone.
- Ambient Footnote Drift
- Classified as a chronic, low-grade R-1 event under Concordance 9.1.3, this is the continual, benign alteration of footnote call numbers in proximity to active Retroactive Alignment chambers. It is considered a contributing factor to the Retroactive Numeracy observed in long-serving archivists.
Doctrinal Disputes
The central controversy concerns the Doctrine of Retroactive Standing. If a retroactively aligned entity is granted standing from its moment of conceptualization, critics argue, then any contamination it generates is equally "real" and thus impossible to fully erase. The Retroactive School maintains that contamination is a procedural artifact, not an entity with standing, and thus can be sanitized. This schism directly influences protocols: the School advocates for aggressive Re-gilding, while dissenting factions call for permanent Echo Containment of severely contaminated volumes, treating them as quasi-anomalies themselves.
