Conditional Existence Argument
MS 2578.62 · Practices and doctrines
The Conditional Existence Argument is a foundational logical doctrine codified in Clause 17, Sub-Annex Ω, which posits that the reality of a catalogued subject within the Tower is contingent upon the completion of its archival processing, not upon any intrinsic property of the subject itself. It is the primary philosophical framework distinguishing "catalogued reality" from unprocessed potentiality, and its practical applications govern the operations of the Cartographer-Archivist's Office and the Vault of Conditional Authority.
Core Principle and Formal Statement
The Argument is formally rendered as: "A thing exists for the purposes of the Archive if, and only if, it has been assigned a provisional shelfmark and entered into the Pending Ledgers." This creates a state known as Conditional Existence, which persists from the moment of entry until final ratification and physical shelving. During this period, the subject possesses what is termed "provisional ontology"; it may be referenced, cross-indexed, and its properties debated, but it cannot be physically accessed or verified outside of ledger entries. The doctrine is often contrasted with the Intrinsic Numeration Argument, which concerns systemic self-reference rather than ontological status.
Administrative Implementation
Operationally, the Argument is enacted through the Registry Procedures of the Twenty-Third Concordance. When a Librarian submits a proposal for a new holding—for instance, a Culinary Paradox or a Speculative Aquarium—it is immediately granted a Spiral-Aperture designation (e.g., Λ-7-) and logged in the Pending Ledgers housed on Floor 909. This act of inscription is the sole generative event. The subsequent journey through committees, including review by the Committee for Ontological Review, is an audit of the holding's consistency with existing canon, not an investigation into its truth or falsehood, which the initial logging has already settled.
The Problem of Unprocessed Referents
A significant and persistent scholarly dispute arises from cross-references within a conditionally existing entry to other, as-yet uncatalogued subjects. For example, a newly entered treatise on "The Forty-Seven Silent Bells of the Sub-Basement" may repeatedly cite "The Keeper of the Watches," a figure with no existing shelfmark. The majority school, led by the archivists at the Stack of Open Argument, holds that such referents are automatically granted derivative conditional existence, creating a cascading ontological dependency that must be resolved before final ratification. A minority school, associated with the Vault of Conditional Authority, argues this constitutes a "recursive ontological hazard" and that such references must be struck, rendering the primary entry potentially incoherent but procedurally pure.
Conditional Citizenship and Personhood
The principles of the Argument extend to sentient catalogued entities. Derivative Citizenship is often preceded by a period of Conditional Personhood, wherein an entity (such as a spectral cartographer or a theoretical architect) is logged into the ledgers before its behavioral parameters are fully defined. During this phase, the entity has legal standing to file forms and appeal decisions—a right stemming from its logged existence—but cannot claim privileges reserved for Perpetual Citizens. The Ordinance of Cessation 73-C provides the mechanism for dissolving a conditional entity should its entry be deemed irreconcilably contradictory prior to ratification.
Related Artifacts and Chambers
The material consequences of the doctrine are visible in several dedicated spaces. The Vault of Conditional Forms on Floor 299 stores the physical templates used to generate ledger entries, considered to have a potent, pre-conditional reality. The Chamber of Unfinished Inks, located on the non-sequential floor adjacent to the Eastern Ephemeral Staircase, houses inks that are only visible under the light of a conditional existence query. Furthermore, the very structure of The Argument on Floor 404, where formal hearings are held, is said to be built upon a foundation of unresolved conditional statements, giving the chamber its characteristically unsettled acoustics.
Criticisms and Hermeneutic Challenges
The most potent criticism of the Argument is the so-called "Autocthonic Dilemma": if the Tower itself is a catalogued entity (a premise explored in the Intrinsic Numeration Argument), then its own reality must be conditional upon a prior, completed archival act, implying an infinite regress of archives. Proponents counter that the Tower exists as the precondition for cataloguing, and is therefore exempt from its own rule—a position ratified, albeit circularly, by Voluntary Declaration 9. Practical challenges remain, particularly regarding the disposal of ontological debris from entries whose conditional existence is revoked, a duty falling to the custodians of Sub-level 7.
