Self-Motile Fixture
MS 2062.02 · Practices and doctrines
A self-motile fixture is any permanent or semi-permanent installation within The Tower that exhibits autonomous or non-instructed movement. Such motion falls under the legal doctrine of latent Intent and is regulated by Ordinance 712-C and Annex Theta of the Sixth Concordance. Distinct from Autonomous Library Scouts, which are granted operational mandates, self-motile fixtures are classified as infrastructure, and their movement is considered a property of their form and function, not a willed act.
Legal Framework
The primary regulatory instrument is Ordinance 712-C, "On the Movement of Fixed Holdings," enacted 12-Δ-22. It establishes three categories of self-motility. Type I: Prescribed Path includes fixtures like the Wandering Gallery, whose motion follows a predictable, documented route (e.g., spirals, pendulums, or tessellating patterns). Type II: Reactive Motility describes fixtures that move in response to environmental triggers, such as the lumen-sconces in the Galleries of Attenuated Light that reorient to follow a reader. Type III: Apparent Volition is the most contentious category, reserved for fixtures whose movement patterns are complex, non-repeating, and resist algorithmic prediction, such as certain specimens of Aethelred's Permanent Glow. Type III fixtures require a Certificate of Volitional Migration from the Department of Self-Aware Archives if they migrate beyond their designated chamber.
Notable Examples
The Atrium of Infinite Regress is a premier Type I fixture, its reconfiguration sequence formally mapped by the legal philosopher V. Selvage. The Infinite Registries on Administrative Floor 44 demonstrate Type II motility, shifting their aisles to maintain optimal distance from one another. The debate over whether the Log of Self-Reference qualifies as a self-motile fixture (it is stored within the vault it catalogs) was a central point of contention during the Ninth Librarian's Expedition's logistical crisis on Floor Ξ-44.
Doctrinal Disputes
The School of Applied Paradox maintains that the very classification of a "self-motile fixture" is a paradox, as it conflates the ontological category of "fixture" (a held object) with the operational category of "agent." They cite the Paradox of Self-Application, asking whether a scroll-stand that moves to avoid being cataloged is performing a cataloging action. The Axiomatic School, in contrast, begins from Clause 1 of the foundational ordinances, which states "A thing that moves, is," and argues motility is a simple, observable property requiring no further philosophical justification. This Intrinsic Numeration Argument is frequently contrasted with the more nuanced Conditional Existence Argument forwarded by contextualists.
A persistent administrative debate concerns the Principles of Self-Sustenance. Clerk Aris famously argued before the Hall of Procedural Anomalies that a self-motile fixture which derives its energy from the decay of its own structure—a theoretical "self-referential decay engine"—would create an infinite regress violating the Principles. This remains a hypothetical, but it informs stringent material audits for all Type III fixtures.
Maintenance and Cataloging
Responsibility for the maintenance and tracking of self-motile fixtures is shared by the Office of Ontological Integrity and the Clerk of Mobile Assets. Their positions are logged in the Infinite Registry using a specialized Declarative Parsing syntax to describe motion vectors. Type I fixtures are assessed via Vector Alpha, the standard path for self-evident properties. A fixture's "home" location is defined not by coordinates, but by the median point of its observed motility range over a standard fiscal cycle, a calculation that itself requires a dedicated, non-motile subsidiary registry.
