Speculative Taxonomy Wing
MS 0661.33 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Speculative Taxonomy Wing is a major research annex on Floor 119, dedicated to the systematic classification of subjects deemed possible but currently uncatalogued. It is the principal operational site for the practical application of Speculative Realism, wherein the formal act of classification is understood to retroactively validate the ontological plausibility of a subject, if not its immediate existence within the Tower's physical holdings.
Location and Structure
The Wing occupies the entirety of the western quadrant of Floor 119 and is connected to the Archaic Protocols Annex of Floor 82 via the circuitous Stairwell 44. Internal navigation is governed by a non-Euclidean layout of shifting reference shelves, designed to physically manifest the conceptual adjacency of related but unproven taxonomies. The main entrance opens onto the Shifting Corridor of the West Wing, which reconfigures its terminus every 47 hours according to the dictates of the Procedural Annex.
Function and Methodology
The core mandate of the Speculative Taxonomy Wing, as established under Provision 12 of the Third Concordance, is to identify and formalize "gaps in the catalogue which, by their very shape, suggest a resident." This is achieved through two primary methodologies:
- Extrapolative Cataloguing: Specialists known as Speculative Cataloguers analyze existing sequences within the Grand Taxonomy to project the characteristics of missing intermediary or terminal entries. For instance, a documented sequence describing "creatures that dream of sound" and "creatures that are dreamed by silence" would mandate the creation of an entry for "the intermediary that hears the silence dreaming."
- Cross-Referential Validation: Entries drafted by the Wing are circulated for peer review to adjacent departments, including the Office of Speculative Reinforcements (for biomechanical properties) and the custodians of Speculative Aquaria (for proposed fluid-dynamic behaviors). An entry is considered provisionally validated once it has been acknowledged by three independent speculative bodies.
Notable Projects and Holdings
The Wing maintains several living taxonomic documents. Its most cited contribution is the Great Taxonomy of Implied Fauna (Project GIFT), which successfully separated custodial entities (such as corridor-cleaners and shelf-shifters) from the speculative biological record, thereby resolving centuries of classificatory confusion. The Wing also curates a suite of Speculative Indices, most notably the controversial Index of Echoic Morphologies (SI-711), which attempts to classify sounds based on the shapes of the objects that failed to produce them.
A permanent exhibit in Aperture 19-Wing displays the "Phantom Holotype"—a meticulously labeled and described glass case that is, and has always been, empty. Its placard reads: "Specimen Q-Ω: The Most Likely Absence."
Administrative Oversight and Controversies
While physically situated on Floor 119, the Speculative Taxonomy Wing falls under the broader administrative purview of the Speculative Realism Wing on Floor 1427. This arrangement, dictated by a footnote in Annex B of the Department of Speculative Biology's charter, has been a source of ongoing procedural friction. Disputes often arise regarding whether a newly proposed taxon constitutes a genuine speculative discovery or merely a "permutation of administrative anxiety," a distinction addressed in contradictory terms by Clause 7 and the Procedural Annex 22.δ.
The most significant recent controversy stemmed from the so-called "Inquest of Stairwell 44," where it was alleged that Speculative Cataloguers were using the stairwell's spiral-variance properties to physically retrieve conceptual prototypes. The findings led to a redefinition of navigation protocols for the Speculative Realism Wing, but absolved the Taxonomy Wing of misconduct, ruling that "the retrieval of an idea is not an acquisition, but a confirmation of a prior filing."
Interdepartmental Relations
The Wing maintains a necessary, if occasionally strained, relationship with the Department of Speculative Biology on Floor 112, which holds primary authority over the Grand Taxonomy. It provides the foundational speculative frameworks for the applied research conducted in the Speculative Physiology labs. All draft taxonomies are required to undergo a chronometric consistency review with the Chronometry Wing to ensure they do not propose entities that would violate established causal loops within the Tower's architecture.
