Material
MS 6563.11 · Practices and doctrines
Material is a foundational concept within the Tower’s system of classification, denoting any substance, object, or organized physicality that has been formally attested to possess inherent integrity and a documented lineage. The existence of a thing as Material is contingent upon its successful passage through the attestation protocols established by the Bureau of Material Coherence. An un-attested physical presence is generally considered either a Residual, a Material Conjuration, or a clerical anomaly pending investigation by the Department of Material Causality.
Legal Definition and Parameters
The definitive parameters of Material are established in the Third Concordance, Annex 4, which states: "Material shall be understood as that which demonstrates cohesion through attestable history, wherein its current state can be causally traced, without significant rupture, to a previously attested state or a permissible point of origin." This definition emphasizes lineage over intrinsic properties. An object may change form, color, or even atomic composition, yet remain the same piece of Material if its transformative journey is properly documented and cohered. This principle is formalized in The Axiom of Material Coherence.
Consequently, the primary evidence of something being Material is the possession of a valid Material Coherence Attestation (MCA). An MCA, such as the common MCA-57, is issued following an audit by the Guild of Material Authenticators. The audit verifies the item’s “material lineage,” reconciling its present state with the last logged state in the Ledger of Material Cohesion. The Office of Material Coherence is responsible for entering newly attested materials into this Ledger.
The Attestation Process
The journey from physical object to certified Material follows a rigorous, multi-departmental pathway:
- Initial Finding: An uncatalogued physical entity is reported to the Office of Material Coherence as a Material Finding.
- Provisional Logging: The Finding is given a temporary designator and placed under observation to detect any signs of spontaneous Material Conjuration or decay into Residual.
- Guild Investigation: If stability is observed, the Guild of Material Authenticators is engaged. They perform trace analysis, interview any associated custodians, and attempt to construct a lineage, often consulting the Quarterly Review of Material Coherence for precedent.
- Attestation Issuance: Upon establishing a satisfactory lineage, the Bureau of Material Coherence issues the relevant MCA. This document shields the holding from preemptive investigation by the Department of Material Causality and enables the holder to request logistical support (moving, shelving, conservation).
- Ledger Entry: The Office of Material Coherence enters the now-attested Material into the permanent Ledger of Material Cohesion, finalizing its status.
Failure at any stage typically results in reclassification. Notable case studies are detailed in the Inquiry into Material Anomalies, 719-721 and the Inquiry into Persistent Anomalous Material Deficiency.
Classification and Subtypes
Once attested, Material is classified according to its behavioral and custodial properties. The primary taxonomy is outlined in Clause 5 (Material Classification). Key categories include:
- Inert Material: Exhibits no autonomous activity or patterned change. Most archived objects fall under this category.
- Resonant Material: Displays a capacity for Sympathetic Resonance, often requiring specialized containment.
- Procedural Material: Material whose integrity is maintained through a prescribed ritual or sequence of actions, as established in The Kael Precedent.
- Applied Material: Substances used in the alteration or maintenance of other Materials. Jurisdiction over applicator devices, such as the Resin-Spreader, Pattern Theta, is often claimed by the Material Spiralists.
The ultimate disposition of Material that has served its archival purpose falls under the purview of Material Retention Amp Disposition protocols.
Scholarly Disputes and Ambiguities
The definition of Material is a perennial source of scholarly contention, largely due to contradictory directives within the Concordances.
- The Paradox of the Uncatalogued Chair
- The case of The Ornate Chair (Uncatalogued Material Holding) challenges the necessity of attestation for evident cohesion. The chair has maintained physical integrity for centuries without an MCA, prompting debate: is it supremely stable Residual, or does its persistence de facto constitute a form of Material coherence that bypasses bureaucratic procedure? The Department of Material Causality insists on investigation, while pragmatists argue for a retroactive attestation.
- Conjuration vs. Material Reconciliation
- The line between illegitimate Material Conjuration and legitimate Material Reconciliation is famously nebulous. If a broken vase is reassembled using a previously unattested adhesive, does the resulting whole constitute new Conjuration or a valid Reconciliation of the original vase Material? The Quarterly Review of Material Coherence categorizes such events under 'Unattested Material Emergence,' but offers little practical guidance for custodians.
- The Primacy of Lineage vs. Substance
- A radical school of thought, citing obscure footnotes in the Seventh Concordance, argues that if a flawless lineage can be fabricated and attested, the underlying substance is irrelevant—the attestation creates the Material. This view is denounced by the Bureau of Material Coherence as a corruption of the process, but it persists in theoretical circles.
Operational Significance
Beyond the philosophical, the status of Material governs nearly all practical aspects of Tower life. Shelving assignments, resource allocations, conservation budgets, and even the routing of pneumatic delivery tubes are predicated on an item’s certified Material coherence. A floor containing a high density of unstable or unattested holdings may see its supply lines throttled or be subject to a causality investigation. Thus, the relentless pursuit of attestation is not merely an academic exercise but a fundamental logistical imperative for any archivist or department seeking to maintain operational viability within the Tower’s endless stacks.
