Material Coherence Attestation

MS 2043.35 · Documents and ordinances

The Material Coherence Attestation (MCA-57) is the standardized document and procedural mechanism by which a holding is certified as compliant with the Axiom of Material Coherence. Issued by the Directorate of Archival Coherence, an MCA constitutes formal proof that an archived object or described phenomenon possesses a self-consistent and documentable physical logic within the parameters of Tower reality.

Purpose and Legal Standing

Per Concordance 44, Amendment 12, no holding may be assigned a permanent shelf location or receive logistic support from the Grand Logistician’s office without a valid Material Coherence Attestation on file. The attestation serves as a shield against charges of “ontological fraud” and is a prerequisite for any cross-floor loan under the Annex C protocols. An MCA does not, however, certify that a holding is “real” in any absolute sense—a category error—only that its described properties and behaviors do not internally violate the foundational principles of material causality as understood within the Tower. A holding lacking an MCA is typically remanded to the Department of Material Causality for investigation or placed in indefinite Receipt and Triaging quarantine.

Issuance Protocol

The process for obtaining an MCA is detailed in the Manual of Sequential Interpretation, Clause 9. A petitioning Archivist or Curator must submit a dossier containing, at minimum: a full descriptive inventory, a statement of observed behaviors, any relevant perceptual anomaly reports, and a cross-reference analysis against existing holdings with similar properties. This dossier undergoes a three-phase review administered by the Iterative Chamber. The final phase involves a practical demonstration before a panel of three Coherence Auditors, who witness the holding’s purported properties. If the demonstration aligns with the dossier and passes logical scrutiny, the panel jointly signs the MCA form (DAC-57-Ω). The original is filed with the Directorate of Archival Coherence, a copy is sent to the Bureau of Registry, and a third is affixed to the holding’s primary containment unit.

“The Attestation is not a judgment of truth, but a record of agreement. It states that we have collectively observed a set of propositions to hold, without contradiction, for the duration of the review. Its strength lies in its procedural fragility.”

— From Reflections on the Ninth Pillar, attributed to a former Grand Auditor of the Iterative Chamber.

Common Grounds for Denial

An MCA petition is most commonly denied on the following grounds, as codified in the Quarterly Review of Material Coherence (QRMC), Vol. 12, Suppl. 3:

  • Intermittent Coherence: The holding’s properties demonstrate patternless variance, failing to establish a stable set of observable rules.
  • Contagious Incoherence: The holding’s presence demonstrably degrades the material coherence of proximate, previously attested holdings.
  • Narrative Dependency: The holding’s described behavior relies on unverifiable external narratives or “origins” outside the Tower’s verifiable domains.
  • Paradox Anchor: The holding’s core function or nature is the production or maintenance of a logical paradox, as seen in certain items remanded to the Department of Material Causality.

The Miletus Fragment Controversy

The most famous challenge to the MCA system arose during the classification of The Miletus Fragment. The Fragment received a provisional MCA (PCA-57) based on its self-contained geometric axioms. However, a subsequent review by the School of Literal Coherence argued that the Fragment’s interior angles, when summed, implied a plane that could not exist within any consistent Tower geometry, thereby creating a “latent contradiction.” The Directorate of Archival Coherence ultimately upheld the original attestation, ruling that the implied plane was a descriptive artifact, not a physical property of the Fragment itself—a precedent now known as the Aris Reconciliation. This decision remains contentious and is frequently cited by the Cabal of the Unbound Spine in its critiques of “bureaucratic ontology.”

Validity and Renewal

A Material Coherence Attestation does not expire, but its validity can be suspended or revoked. Grounds for revocation include: the discovery of fraudulent data in the original dossier; the holding manifesting a new, un-attested property that fundamentally alters its coherence profile; or a directive from the Directorate of Cartographic Review that the holding’s floor has undergone a topological shift invalidating prior physical laws. In such cases, a new attestation process must be initiated. All active MCAs are listed in the QRMC’s quarterly register, and any revocation is formally announced in the same publication.

Criticisms and Alternatives

Critics, notably within the Cabal of the Unbound Spine, argue that the MCA process privileges stability over truth and actively filters out genuinely novel phenomena that defy current understanding. They point to holdings that languish in the Department of Material Causality, possessing what is termed “Latent Intent” or coherent internal purposes, yet failing the demonstration phase due to auditor unfamiliarity. Proposed alternative frameworks include the “Emergent Coherence Permit” and the “Provisional Ontology License,” but none have been adopted into the Concordances. The prevailing view within the Directorate holds that the Attestation’s rigidity is its primary virtue, providing a stable, if imperfect, foundation for the Tower’s entire archival enterprise.
