Narrative Dependency
MS 1685.92 · Practices and doctrines
Narrative Dependency is a principle of archival taxonomy within the Tower, derived from the Guidelines for Narrative Integrity. It dictates that the classification, arrangement, and preservation of a narrative or historical holding is not determined by its intrinsic content alone, but by its established or implied connections to other, often more foundational, records. It is the narrative corollary to, but distinct from, the principles codified in the Registry of Metrological Dependency.
The principle is primarily operationalized through the mechanism of the Incomplete History. An Incomplete History is a record formally classified as lacking a coherent, self-contained narrative arc; its continued existence and place within the catalog is justified by its dependency on one or more "anchor" narratives. Should these anchor narratives be decommissioned, reclassified, or proven to be subject to the Presumption of Operative Fiction, the dependent Incomplete History loses its archival justification and is typically slated for transfer to the Silent Index. This creates a cascading risk of narrative collapse, a scenario the Department of Procedural Integrity is tasked with mitigating.
Foundational Concordances
The theoretical groundwork for Narrative Dependency is found in Annex D-7 of the Third Concordance, which first defined the Incomplete History. However, the practical enforcement and legal precedents surrounding dependency chains are more extensively covered in the Seventh Concordance, particularly in its clauses governing procedural precedence and the appeals process for disputed classifications. This dual-source framework frequently leads to jurisdictional disputes between the Office of the Annex-Master (Third Concordance) and the Department of Procedural Integrity (Seventh Concordance) regarding which document holds ultimate authority in a given dependency audit.
Measurement and Cultivation
Narrative Dependency is not merely a binary state but exists on a continuum, measured in part by a holding’s Narrative Inertia. A holding with high inertia is considered more self-sustaining and thus less dependent, whereas a holding with low inertia is seen as fragile and potentially parasitic, requiring support. This is where the practice of Narrative Fertilizer is applied. Sanctioned amendments under this protocol are designed not to alter the core narrative of the anchor holding, but to enrich the thematic substrate, thereby strengthening the connective tissue to its dependent histories and increasing their collective inertia, effectively "propping up" the dependent structure.
"The dependent history is not a weed to be removed, but a graft that must be nourished by the host narrative's sap. Our duty is to manage the symbiosis, lest the entire branch wither."
Operational Classifications
Dependencies are formally registered and categorized. The most common types include:
- Thematic Dependency: The dependent holding explores a minor theme, character, or event mentioned only in passing within the anchor narrative (e.g., the Echoes in West Spiral 44 are thematically dependent on the broader meteorological records of the Delta Quarter).
- Evidentiary Dependency: The holding’s entire raison d'être is to serve as evidence for a claim made within another record. This is often seen with Type 4 (Evidentiary) fragments, which lack narrative cohesion outside of their assigned probative role.
- Negative-Space Dependency: The holding’s significance is derived from what it omits or contradicts in the anchor narrative, creating meaning through absence or dissonance. This is a highly unstable form of dependency and a frequent subject of appellate hearings at the Office of Metrological Assurance.
The School of Linear Dependency
The School of Linear Dependency represents the most rigorous application of this principle. They argue that all narratives are ultimately dependent, and that the quest for a truly "primary" or "source" narrative is a philosophical error. They view phenomena like the Tripartite Search not as a failure of cataloging, but as a natural manifestation of infinite regress within narrative dependency chains. Their research often involves tracing dependency lines to their hypothetical point of origin—a project that has, to date, only produced longer and more complex dependency maps filed with the Registry.
Controversies and Audit Risks
The primary controversy surrounding Narrative Dependency is the "Anchor Drift" paradox. As a dependent history is fertilized and develops its own sub-narratives, it can, over time, generate its own dependents. This can lead to a situation where the original anchor narrative is itself reclassified as dependent on its later offspring, creating a circular dependency loop. Resolving such loops requires a formal Dependency Tracing audit, a process analogous to that used in metrological disputes but employing narrative concordances instead of measurement protocols. Failure to resolve a loop can result in the entire cluster being placed under a Tripartite Barrier, isolating it until its narrative dependencies can be conclusively mapped—a process that may involve the application of Silentium Resin to stabilize the records pending judgment.
