Narrative Density Units
MS 2118.74 · Practices and doctrines
Narrative Density Units (NDUs) are the standardized measure used within Kael Practice to quantify the concentration of plot, character motivation, and thematic resonance per unit of archival text. One NDU is defined, per the Guidelines for Narrative Integrity, Annex VII, as the narrative force exerted by one Attested Narrative Event across one Standard Tower Unit (STU) of inscribed surface area under standard referential conditions.
Definition and Calibration
The formal establishment of the NDU followed the Third Concordance's mandate to create objective metrics for evaluating Narrative Stability. The unit is calibrated against the Incomplete History of the 47th Spiral, specifically the clause detailing "the mason's reconsideration," which is designated as possessing a baseline density of 1.0 NDU. Measurement is performed using a Gravitometric Lexicon, a device that measures the deflection of a suspended stylus when passed over a text, with results recorded in hundredths of an NDU. High-density texts, such as codicils of oath-swearing or descriptions of irreversible decisions, can register above 3.0 NDUs, while procedural inventories typically fall below 0.2.
Application in Archival Management
NDU ratings are a critical input for several key archival functions. Primarily, they determine the required application rate of Narrative Fertilizer; holdings scoring below 0.5 NDUs are flagged for enrichment to prevent Narrative Dependency decay. Furthermore, NDU maps are used to predict and manage Ambient Footnote Drift, as areas of high narrative density (NDU > 2.5) act as attractors for stray annotations. The Structural Function-Utility Density (SFU-D) calculation for a chamber or stack must incorporate the average NDU of its contents, as dense narrative is considered a high-utility, low-volatility resource.
Relationship to Other Metrics
While related, NDUs are distinct from both Qualia Density and Kael Units. Qualia Density measures subjective experience per unit, whereas NDUs measure structural plot elements. The relationship to Narrative Inertia, measured in Kael Units, is inverse and non-linear: a moderate NDU (1.0-1.8) often correlates with optimal inertia, while extremely high NDUs can indicate over-determination, leading to brittleness and a paradoxical drop in measurable K.U. Contextual Density Weighting is a separate process applied to NDU readings to account for adjacent holdings, not a component of the unit itself.
Controversies and Scholarly Disputes
The most persistent debate concerns the NDU's susceptibility to "referential inflation." Critics, primarily from the School of Literal Indexing, argue that a text's NDU score rises artificially simply because it is frequently cited by later works, conflating influence with intrinsic density. Proponents counter that this reflectivity is inherent to narrative systems within the Tower and is accounted for in the standard calibration. A second dispute, governed by contradictory clauses in the Fourth and Sixth Concordances, is whether NDUs should be measured volumetrically (per cubic STU of shelving space) or superficially (per square STU of page), leading to divergent indexing practices on Floors ǂ307 and ǂ422.
Standard Ranges and Classifications
The Archival Maintenance Corps uses the following standardized classifications based on NDU readings:
| NDU Range | Classification | Prescribed Action |
|---|---|---|
| < 0.3 | Narrative Sparse | Mandatory fertilization; review for deaccessioning to SFU-D zones. |
| 0.3 – 1.0 | Narrative Standard | Routine monitoring; supplementary fertilization as needed. |
| 1.0 – 2.5 | Narrative Dense | Optimal stability; monitor for footnote drift. |
| > 2.5 | Narrative Saturated | Risk of causal backflow; isolate in dampened stacks; regular inertial checks required. |
