Registry of Metrological Dependency

MS 7765.14 · Documents and ordinances

The Registry of Metrological Dependency is a procedural record maintained by the Office of Metrological Assurance that traces the lineage of all legally sanctioned measurement standards back to the Standard Temporal Unit (STU) as mandated by Clause 8 of Concordance 17. It serves as the definitive map for Dependency Tracing, a required practice in any Standard Metrological Protocol dispute brought before a Metrological Spire.

Structure and Scope

The Registry is not a single document but a dynamic, inter-referential system of ledgers housed within the Metrological Vaults on Floor -7. Its primary function is to log every instance where a secondary or tertiary measurement device is certified against a higher-order standard, creating a verifiable chain of calibration. According to the Procedural Annex to SMP-Δ, the Registry’s scope includes all dimensional, temporal, luminous, and somantic standards, though the latter often requires supplemental verification from the Somatics Collegium. Each entry must include the certifying Spire’s seal, the aperture and spiral markings of the devices involved, the date of calibration (in STU-cycles), and a citation of the applicable Protocol.

Operational Praxis

In practice, a practitioner of Dependency Tracing—often a Provost of Calibration—begins with the contested measurement and consults the Registry to construct a "dependency tree" back to the primary STU. This process is governed by the Bureau of Metrological Harmony, which annually issues revised weighting tables for calculating Standard Fidelity Uncertainty (SFU-D). A complete and uncontradicted tree is considered prima facie evidence of a measurement’s validity. However, the Registry itself is subject to the Registry of Perpetual Amendments, and it is not uncommon for a dependency path to be invalidated by a subsequent amendment, retroactively nullifying years of measurement data.

“The Registry does not certify truth, only procedural lineage. A measurement may be perfectly documented and entirely wrong.” – Ruling of the Central Metrological Spire, Case 7Δ-Θ.

Contradictions and the Linear Dependency School

A central scholarly dispute concerns the Registry’s handling of recursive or circular dependencies. The School of Linear Dependency holds that any loop within the Registry is an administrative error that must be pruned, as it violates the linear causal chain mandated by the Charter. Opposing this view are the so-called "Linear Snarlers," who argue that such loops are empirically discovered features of certain Divergent Grid measurements and must be preserved in the Registry as a form of topological data. The Office of Metrological Assurance has issued no definitive ruling, leading to a situation where measurements from identical instruments may have legally valid yet topologically incompatible dependency trees, depending on which Metrological Spire certified them.

Relationship to Other Registries

The Registry of Metrological Dependency is formally a sub-registry of the Infinite Registry on Floor 9001, which maps legal and procedural dependencies across all Tower governance. It frequently cross-references the Registry of Recursive Processes for complex calibration cycles and the Registry of Slowed Experience when certifying Temporal Gauges. Its records are considered subordinate to the Central Registry of Precedents in appellate hearings before the Office of Metrological Assurance. This interlocking system ensures that a dispute over the length of a shelf on Floor -12 can, through sufficient appeals, engage the entirety of the Tower’s bureaucratic machinery.

Notable Anomalies

Several entries in the Registry are the subject of ongoing study. The most famous is Dependency Path -7-Ω, which purports to trace a standard graduated cylinder back to the STU via a chain of 217 calibrations, the 89th of which is a calibration performed by the device upon itself. This path remains legally valid, as its contradiction was lodged during the "Lost Fortnight" of Amendment Moratorium (STU-Cycle 34,992) and was thus never formally entered into the Infinite Registry. The path is routinely cited by the Linear Snarlers as proof of their thesis.
