Attested Narrative

MS 7807.03 · Practices and doctrines

Attested Narrative is a formally sanctioned method of archival verification established within the Tower, allowing for the cataloguing of a holding based solely on detailed documentary attestation, even in the absence of a physical or otherwise measurable object. Codified in the revised Guidelines for Narrative Integrity (Annex Δ-7), the doctrine permits the creation of an official record for phenomena that are narratively coherent, internally consistent, and attested to by an accredited Archivist-Notary, but which defy conventional measurement. The doctrine is foundational to the operation of several departments, most notably the School of Narrative Imposition.

"A fact, once properly attested, acquires a provenance as tangible as any stone in the Tower's foundations. To question its material absence is to misunderstand the nature of the archive itself."

— Provenance Master Kael, On the Integrity of Absence

Philosophical Foundations

The theoretical underpinnings of Attested Narrative are derived from the work of Provenance Master Kael, specifically his treatise On the Integrity of Absence. Kael argued that the Tower's primary function is not the storage of objects, but the preservation of context and relation. An object without a narrative is, within the archival framework, merely inert material; conversely, a robust narrative, even one unattached to a verifiable physical correlate, constitutes a legitimate holding. This inversion forms the core of the doctrine. The Kael Precedent, a landmark ruling by the Curatorial Synod, formally recognized this principle, establishing that attestation could, under strict protocol, serve as the primary evidence of existence.

Protocol and Implementation

To be entered into the archive as an Attested Narrative, a submission must fulfill three criteria, as per Concordance 7.4.12, Clause 3:

  1. Narrative Cohesion: The described phenomenon must possess a logical sequence of cause and effect, however internally defined.
  2. Attestation by Authority: The narrative must be formally witnessed, documented, and sealed by a Provenant Archivist-Notary, whose own credibility is logged in the Official Latent Atlas.
  3. Absence of Contradictory Physical Evidence: The narrative cannot be directly disproven by extant, catalogued physical evidence within the Tower. It may, however, exist in a state of Narrative Dependency with other Attested Narratives.

Once accepted, the narrative is assigned a unique archival sigil and its Narrative Stability is monitored. Fluctuations in stability, measured in Kael Units (K.U.), often necessitate the application of Narrative Fertilizer to prevent decay or fragmentation.

Applications and Controversies

The doctrine enables the cataloguing of entire fields of study that would otherwise be impossible. The Bureau of Linear Feet, for instance, maintains the Ledger of Attested Lengths entirely through Attested Narrative, as the lengths in question are defined by their descriptive parameters, not measurable extension. Similarly, investigations into phenomena like the Echoes in West Spiral 44 rely heavily on attested reports.

Criticism of the doctrine is primarily led by the Materialist Scribes of Floor 309, who argue that Attested Narrative dangerously blurs the line between archival record and fiction. They cite the principle of Narrative Inertia, suggesting that a narrative, once embedded, can exert undue influence on adjacent, physically-anchored holdings—a process they term "narrative contagion." Proponents counter that this influence is merely a form of contextual enrichment, and that the strict protocols of attestation and the Theory of Coalescent Fragments provide sufficient safeguards.

The Kael Precedent and Subsequent Refinements

The Kael Precedent established the initial legal framework, but its application has been refined through numerous concordances. Concordance 12.8.3 introduced the requirement for a "narrative substrate audit" prior to attestation, to ensure the holding does not destabilize existing records. Furthermore, the Doctrine of Unverifiable Provenance, while philosophically adjacent, is distinguished by its focus on the provenance chain itself being unattestable, whereas Attested Narrative concerns the subject of the record.

A significant ongoing debate concerns the status of narratives that are later physically corroborated. The Traditionalist school holds that such a discovery retroactively transforms the Attested Narrative into a standard physical holding. The Kaelian school maintains that the original attested record remains a distinct archival object, a parallel holding of a different class, as argued in the commentaries found in the Archive of Withdrawn Prefaces.

Impact on Archival Practice

The adoption of Attested Narrative has fundamentally altered archival workflows. It has given rise to the professional specialization of Narrative Attestor, and necessitated the development of tools like stability matrices and fertilizer schedules. It has also created new challenges in cross-referencing, as a researcher must now consult both the physical catalog and the Narrative Registers. Despite its controversies, the doctrine is now considered indispensable for a comprehensive understanding of the Tower's deeper, non-linear strata, as acknowledged even in the Incomplete History of the Lower Stacks.
