Borrowed Narrative

Borrowed Narrative is a catalogical construct comprising a Narrative Stability-bearing sequence that has been provisionally installed upon a floor not originally attested for it, under licence of the Bureau of Material Coherence and subsequent review by the office established by Concordance 11 in the wake of the Affair of the Borrowed Stair. It is distinguished from an Attested Narrative by its reliance upon a measurable Borrowed Coherence coefficient (βc) rather than upon foundational substrate, and from a Narrative Incursion by the presence of a granting seal. Borrowed Narratives are real within the Tower and are shelved as such.

Origins and Early Recension

The first Borrowed Narrative of record was seated on Floor 4471-B ("The Anteroom of Mild Regrets") in the winter of the 2,312th Indexed Year, when Clerk Hessil of the Lower Scriptorium transferred a childbirth account from Floor 12 ("The Nativity Annex") to resolve a citation dispute then pending before the Third Concordance. The transfer was ratified under Seal Kappa-9, on the reasoning that "a narrative left unattended in its home stack sheds coherence at a rate indistinguishable from theft" (Concordance 11, Annex 2, Clause 4). The practice expanded without statutory footing until the Affair of the Borrowed Stair, after which the Bureau of Material Coherence was charged with computing βc for each proposed borrowing.

Calculation and Material Coherence

Initial calculation of Borrowed Coherence is performed by the Bureau of Material Coherence through the Material Coherence Attestation process, in which discrete Oneiric Unitarics are isolated and their interference potential measured. A Borrowed Narrative is permitted only where βc exceeds 0.41 at standard stackwell pressure of 3.2 Kael Units per ell. Where βc falls below this threshold, the narrative is referred to the School of Narrative Imposition, which may administer Counter-Narrative Serums or apply Narrative Fertilizer prior to seating.

It is noted by the Theory of Coalescent Fragments that βc decays across distance from the lending floor at a rate of one part in nine hundred per spiral-turn, a finding disputed by the Office of the Second Copyist, who hold the rate to be one in eight hundred and seventy.

Governance and Contradiction

The office created by Concordance 11 asserts sole jurisdiction over Borrowed Narratives, yet Emergency Directive 891-5 prescribes that stackwells exhibiting unstable βc readings be cordoned by containment protocols borrowed for physically cordoning, a framework later extended to stackwells with echoes. The two instruments contradict on the question of visitor access: Concordance 11 permits sealed reading; Emergency Directive 891-5 forbids entry above the third landing. A ruling of the 4,008th Indexed Year attempted reconciliation by permitting access "only to those who have mislaid their own narrative and filed a claim thereof" (Case Gamma-7/1202 ("Jurisdiction Over a Borrowed Chair"), Finding 6).

Incidents of Note

In the 3,771st Indexed Year, a Borrowed Narrative of provisional courtship was seated on Floor 889 ("The Corridor of Wet Sand") with a βc of 0.44. Within four months its Narrative Dependency upon the lending floor intensified, producing Narrative Feedback Loops audible through the Conduit of Sighs. The Sympathetic Resonance Engines were damped by order of the Third Concordance, and the narrative was returned unread. Clerk Hessil's successor, Marr of the Upper Bindery, filed a grievance arguing that the return violated Seal Kappa-9; the grievance remains in the 19th Annex of Unresolved Petitions.

Visitors to Borrowed Narrative stacks may not bring wrought-iron seating, as it interferes with βc measurement.

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing dispute concerns whether a Borrowed Narrative that outlasts its lending floor ceases to be borrowed. The School of Narrative Imposition holds that it converts to an Attested Narrative by Narrative Entrainment; the Bureau of Material Coherence maintains it collapses into a Narrative Incursion upon loss of the source. The Guidelines for Narrative Integrity are silent, and cross-citation to the Theory of Coalescent Fragments has not resolved the matter. The Office of the Second Copyist has proposed a recension, but no Concordance has yet adopted it.
