Point of Origin Floorstairaperture

MS 0791.14 · Practices and doctrines

Point of Origin (Floor/Stair/Aperture) is a tripartite administrative designation used within the Tower's navigational and archival protocols to establish the primary vector of an object's, person's, or concept's presence within the structure. The term does not necessarily indicate a place of creation, but rather the first point of documented manifestation within the Tower's formal records. The three components—Floor, Stair, and Aperture—are not always concurrently required, and their relevance is dictated by the specific procedural context, most notably the completion of Form L-29 and compliance with the Chain of Non-Origin.

Component Definitions

Floor
The numerical or named level of initial registration. This is the mandatory and most frequently cited element. It must correspond to an officially catalogued floor, such as The Atrium of Commencement, or, in instances of theoretical or disputed locales, a placeholder designation (e.g., "Provisional Floor Δ-12").
Stair
The specific vertical conduit through which the subject is deemed to have arrived at the designated Floor. This may refer to a major staircase, a service ascender, or a disused spiral. In cases where the subject's arrival did not involve vertical transit, the Stair component is recorded as "N/A" or "Point-of-Origin Static." The disappearance of Access Point 22-Delta necessitated a temporary amendment to this protocol.
Aperture
The precise portal, archway, or interface through which the subject crossed the threshold onto the Floor from the Stair (or, in static cases, into the Tower's perceptual field). The functions and classifications of Apertures are enumerated in documents such as the Annex Gamma-7 of the Ninth Concordance. An Aperture Gamma, for instance, is a permitted location for significant administrative acts.

Procedural Applications

The Point of Origin is a critical field in all transit and cataloguing documentation. Per the Transit Manifest guidelines, the Point of Origin must be verifiable against the list of authorized transit points. Its primary functions are:

Scholarly Disputes

The most persistent doctrinal conflict concerns the ontological priority of the designation. The prevailing "Manifestationist" school, supported by the treatise On the Provenance of Holdings, argues that the Point of Origin is a recorded fact that itself confers a form of reality upon the subject within the Tower's framework. The rival "Trace Theory" position, often citing the Chain of Non-Origin, contends that the designation is a procedural fiction applied retroactively to subjects that lack a verifiable external source; the Point of Origin is not where something began, but where the archive began to acknowledge it. This debate is particularly acute in cases like the Year 742 Soporific Spore Incident, where the Western Habitation Annex is listed as the Point of Origin, yet no credible antecedent for the spores has been established.

Notable Exceptions and Anomalies

  • The Atrium of Commencement: Floor 1,001 is the formally recognized Point of Origin for all authorized vertical exploration, as per the Partial Survey. It is treated as a default origin for administrative purposes when a more specific one cannot be determined.
  • Floor 0: By Concordance, Floor 0 cannot be listed as a Point of Origin for any physical entity or documented event. Its use in this field is reserved for abstract concepts, such as the origin point of a recursive cataloguing algorithm or a state of pure potentiality.
  • Unregistered Apertures: Instances where a subject manifests through an aperture not listed in the official registries (e.g., a temporary gap in a gallery wall) require the filing of a Form 88-C with the "Stair" and "Aperture" fields left blank, pending a survey by the Central Index.

Related Concepts

The Point of Origin is distinct from, though often conflated with, several other key archival concepts. It is not the same as the Pedigree, which traces a holding's chain of custody, nor is it synonymous with the Provenance, which may imply an external source. It is a purely internal, spatial-temporal coordinate within the Tower's own manifold. Its relationship to theoretical constructs like the Central Spire or the Axis of Compliance remains a subject of metaphysico-administrative speculation, as these entities are themselves often considered to have no single, definable Point of Origin.
