The Atrium of Commencement
MS 8638.82 · Places and structures
The Atrium of Commencement is the formally recognized point of origin for the Partial Survey and the primary administrative nexus for all authorized vertical exploration within the Tower. Constituting the entirety of Floor 1,001, its architecture is characterized by a state of perpetual, organized preparation. It is the location from which some report accessing Floor 1 via a dedicated transit node and is where the Origin Question is maintained as an active entity. Its primary functional component is the Vestibule of Measure, a Primary Vestibule where all expeditionary instrumentation is calibrated against the central metric standard.
Physical Description
The Atrium is a single, vast chamber measuring precisely 1,001 meters in diameter. The walls, composed of seamless, pale grey Administrative-grade limestone, rise to a height of 300 meters before converging into the Central Aperture, a circular opening of fifty meters in diameter that leads directly to the Vertical Access Node. The floor is composed of interlocking hexagonal plates of polished Translumine-infused basalt, each plate inscribed with a unique expedition identifier. Illumination is provided by the ambient glow of the floor plates and by stationary luminal orbs suspended at one-meter intervals along the perimeter, casting a light measured at 5000 Kelvin with no detectable variance.
The most prominent feature is the Vestibule of Measure, situated at the geometric center. It is a raised dais of black marble, upon which rests the Primary Standard Bar, the definitive reference for all linear measurement within the Tower’s exploratory context. Surrounding the Vestibule are 117 submission desks, each equipped with a terminal for filing Pre-Review Documentation, a requirement before the formal commencement of any Ontological Review.
Administrative Function
The Atrium operates under the direct authority of the Clerk-Registrar of Commencement, a position defined and rotated according to the procedures outlined in the Seventh Concordance. All expeditions claiming official status must begin their documentation cycle here. The process is governed by a strict temporal framework: the cycle’s commencement, duration, and conclusion are dictated by Clause VII.4-9, which synchronizes with the Tower’s internal chronometric pulse, last recorded as the 17 Sivan 702 Cycle of the Still Pulse.
Key administrative acts performed within the Atrium include:
- Registration of Intent to Survey.
- Calibration of depth-gauges and ontological stabilizers against the Primary Standard.
- Submission of the Mandatory Hypothesis of Anticipated Non-Existence.
- Formal receipt of the Librarian’s Waxwell Seal on the Expedition Charter.
Failure to complete any step invalidates the charter, consigning the proposed expedition to the archives of the Atrium of Lapsed Mandates.
The Origin Question
Maintained within a dedicated alcove off the main chamber is the Origin Question, an entity housed in a crystalline lattice structure. It is not a written query but a sustained vibrational frequency that interacts with the consciousness of any Registrar who approaches. While its precise content is classified above Clearance Sigma, secondary sources such as the Chronicles of the Mutable Atrium suggest it serves as the foundational ontological check for all departures, questioning the very premise of seeking that which is catalogued as non-existent. Scholarly debate, notably between the schools of the Grand Atrium of Reference and the Atrium of Authority, centers on whether the Question is a safeguard, a ritual, or the first catalogued subject of the Tower itself.
Connections and Anomalies
The Atrium of Commencement is designated the "Point of Origin" in all official cartography. However, archival discrepancies arise concerning its connectivity. While it is universally accepted as the gateway to downward exploration, several expedition logs, notably those from the Echovoid Atrium survey, claim to have accessed what they designated "Floor 1" via a transit node physically present in the Atrium. The Atrium Administrative has issued a standing clarification (Directive 101.7) stating that any such designation refers to a procedural pre-floor and holds no sequential or spatial weight, a ruling contested by the cartographers of the Floor 1173 (The Penumbral Atrium).
A persistent acoustic anomaly, documented as the "Sigh of Preparation," is also recorded here. It manifests as a low-frequency exhalation detectable by sensitive equipment precisely three minutes before any authorized expedition’s scheduled departure. Its source is unknown, though it is often informally associated with the phenomena of other named atria.
Scholarly Disputes
The primary doctrinal conflict regarding the Atrium concerns its ontological priority. The Seventh Concordance explicitly designates it as the starting point. However, Annex Delta of the largely overlooked Third Concordance implies that "commencement" is a retrospective designation applied only after an expedition’s conclusion, suggesting the Atrium’s status is not inherent but conferred. This creates the logical paradox of expeditions needing to conclude in order to have properly begun, a matter of intense debate in procedural tribunals. Consequently, some factions argue for the recognition of the Grand Atrium as a more logically consistent, if less bureaucratically convenient, point of origin.
