The Origin Question

MS 4625.12 · Practices and doctrines

The Origin Question is the unresolved procedural contention regarding the original source of the material used to construct the first volume of the First Concordance. The Question is formally defined as a Class 5 Open Question by Annex B of the Department of Speculative Biology's charter, and is maintained as an active, extant entity on Floor 1,001 (The Atrium of Commencement) under the stewardship of the Chamber of Recursive Justification.

Formal Statement

The Question is documented in Administrative Longhand on a single sheet of 90gsm laid parchment sourced from Floor 404. It reads: "By what means and from what location was the substrate for the foundational script of Concordance One obtained prior to the establishment of the Cataloguing Principle?" The parchment is housed in a vacuum-sealed vitrine of Third Growth Ironwood from the Moss-Growth Spire, which is itself suspended by silk threads within a null-gravity field in the Atrium’s central vault.

Procedural Context and the Chain of Non-Origin

As the First Concordance predates all formal cataloguing protocols, standard provenance tracings are inapplicable. The matter is therefore governed by the Chain of Non-Origin, a procedural model that treats the absence of a verifiable external source as a documented pedigree in itself. Compliance with the Chain dictates that investigations must isolate and document three components: the Point of Origin Floor, Stair, and Aperture. In this case, the lack of a verifiable point has generated more documentation than any confirmed origin in Tower history. Form P-9.4, used to document this chain, has been submitted in excess of fourteen thousand times regarding the Question, each instance citing contradictory precedents from later Concordances.

The treatise On the Origin of Concordances is frequently invoked, particularly its first clause, which ambiguously states that "a perfect archive is a dead one." Proponents of maintaining the Question’s open status argue this clause explicitly forbids resolving the matter, as doing so would perfect and thus kill a foundational component of the archive. Opposition scholars cite the same clause as a metaphor for procedural stagnation, not a literal injunction.

Administrative Status and Incidents

The Question’s status as an open entity necessitates specific handling protocols. Any discussion of it within Queried is, by that floor’s inherent property, rendered automatically inaudible, as the spoken query ceases to be a question and becomes a statement of the Question’s existence. Furthermore, the Sigma Protocol was invoked in Year 742 following the Year 742 Soporific Spore Incident, when a spore release in the Western Habitation Annex was incorrectly hypothesized by an apprentice to be linked to "origin molds" mentioned in a marginal gloss of the Question. The protocol’s activation resulted in a three-century moratorium on biological metaphors in related scholarship.

The Question’s most significant administrative impact was the Crisis of the Diverging Citation, triggered when Scribe-Adjunct Kaelen’s Draft Provision 881.α attempted to cite the Question as a precedent for suspending the On the Provenance of Holdings guidelines. The resulting precedent split required the convocation of the Chamber of Measured Dispute for 90 years.

Current Stewardship

Stewardship rotates every 33 years between the Librarians of the Chamber of Recursive Justification and the Archivists of the Log of Unanswered Questions. The current steward’s sole duty is to ensure the vitrine’s integrity and to add one footnote to the collective commentary each decade. The footnote may not advance an argument, but may only document the environmental conditions of the Atrium or note the continued absence of a definitive answer. As of the last rotation, the commentary spans 47 volumes, which are stored adjacent to the vitrine. They are considered the Question’s primary holdings, transforming the inquiry into a self-sustaining catalogue entry, thereby fulfilling, in a purely bureaucratic sense, the archive’s central function.
