Keeper of Paradoxes is an honorific title granted by the Keeper of the Spiral under Concordance 22, clause 7, to any Librarian who has successfully catalogued and reconciled a paradox of the highest order. The title is not a civil office and confers no administrative authority, but it carries significant scholarly prestige and certain procedural privileges within the Division of Ontological Paradoxes. The current recognized postholder is Keeper Valerian, who is also the Keeper of Unspoken Components.

Origins and Criteria

The title was formally instituted in Year 987, following the reconciliation of the Paradox of the Silent Bell, a case which had caused three successive Clerks of Provisional Holdings to resign. Clause 7 of Concordance 22 stipulates that the Keeper of the Spiral may, at their discretion, bestow the honorific upon any Librarian who has "rendered a state of essential contradiction into a stable, cataloguable holding." This is distinct from the work of the Guild or Office, as it requires the paradox to be resolved at the ontological level, integrating it into the Tower's foundational logic rather than merely filing it under a provisional annex.

The criteria are notably vague, leading to frequent petitions for clarification. A synopsis in the Ledger of Perused Paradoxes (Vol. XLII, p. 309) lists the commonly accepted benchmarks: the paradox must have resisted classification for no less than fifty years; its resolution must not create a subsidiary paradox of equal or greater magnitude; and the resolution must be ratified by a quorum of senior Keepers from Division I: Ontological Paradoxes. The last condition is often the most contentious.

Privileges and Responsibilities

The primary privilege of the Keeper of Paradoxes is the right of immediate access to the Vault of Unspoken Components without the standard seven-day petitionary period. This is justified by the assumption that a mind capable of reconciling a major paradox is less likely to be destabilized by exposure to uncatalogued essences. Additionally, the Keeper is entitled to a permanent research station on the floor where their reconciled paradox is housed, though they are not its custodian.

The title implies a standing advisory role to the Keeper of Provisional Holdings on matters of paradoxical accession, particularly when a new holding threatens to reactivate a previously resolved contradiction. However, this responsibility is non-binding; the Bureau of Conceptual Reconciliation handles day-to-day mediation, and the Keeper of Paradoxes is only summoned for consultative review under Negative Concordance protocols.

Notable Holders and Controversies

The most celebrated Keeper of Paradoxes was Keeper Linus, who earned the title for his work on the Non-Consistent Geometries of Spiral 7-Gamma before his appointment as Keeper of the Spiral. His resolution established the precedent that spatial contradictions could be housed within a single, topologically complex archive floor.

The appointment has not been without dispute. The case of Keeper Alaric, posthumously awarded the title in Year 1122 after his contextual dissolution during the Spontaneous Lithic Accretion incident, was heavily debated. Proponents argued his final notes contained the kernel of the reconciliation; opponents, led by the then-Keeper of the Twenty-Third Spire, contended that a paradox resolved by the dissolution of the resolver was no resolution at all, but merely a transfer of the problematic state. Current Status and Scholarly Disagreement

Keeper Theodosia, the First Keeper, has never held the title, a fact sometimes noted by rivals of the Spiral faction. The current holder, Keeper Valerian, reconciled the Paradox of the Unfilled Niche in Year 1210, concerning a classification that actively resisted the placement of any object within it. His dual role as Keeper of Unspoken Components is seen by some as a conflict of interest, as the Vault he administers is the source of many nascent paradoxes.

The central scholarly disagreement surrounds the title's permanence. Concordance 22 is silent on revocation. A minority position, advanced in several petitions from the Guild of Legal Paradoxes, holds that if a reconciled paradox later "unfolds" (a rare but documented occurrence), the title should be rescinded. The majority, citing the Alaric Precedent, maintain that the act of reconciliation at a specific moment in the Tower's chronology is what is being honored, not the perpetual stability of the result. This debate ensures the title remains a live, if honorific, subject within the archival courts.
