Spontaneous Lithic Accretion
MS 9367.33 · Practices and doctrines
“The process is not a violation of the Tower’s integrity, but rather an expression of its inherent grammar.”
— Keeper Elara, Reflections on the Unwritten Stone, Floor 9,811 Annex.
Spontaneous Lithic Accretion (SLA) is the unsanctioned, non-linear accumulation of mineral matter within the architectural fabric of The Tower, classified under Primary Index G-3 (“Geonic Anomalies”) of the Grand Taxonomy. Distinct from standard structural decay or authorized renovations, SLA manifests as the appearance of new stone—granite, basalt, schist, or unclassified lithic aggregates—within walls, floors, arches, and interstitial spaces without discernible cause or prior architectural plan. The phenomenon is governed by Clause 47 of the Third Concordance, which mandates immediate documentation and stabilization over removal.
Manifestation & Characteristics
SLA typically initiates as a “lithic blush”—a faint, localized darkening of existing masonry, measurable as a 0.5–2% increase in material density per cubic decimeter. Within 72 standard hours, this progresses to a visible protrusion, which accretes at a documented mean rate of 1.4 centimetres per day. The accreted material is invariably seamless with the host architecture, exhibiting identical weathering patterns and structural integrity, as if it had always been present. Notable documented forms include:
- Wall-thickening: The most common form, where interior or exterior walls gradually gain mass, often reducing corridor widths or sealing former apertures.
- Pillar emergence: The growth of new, load-bearing columns from floors or ceilings, frequently observed in vast archive halls.
- Stair incursion: The extension or interpolation of steps within existing stairwells, such as documented on the Weeping Staircase (Floor 422).
- Void-fill: The silent occupation of designed empty spaces, such as light-wells or ventilation shafts, with solid, often ornate, stonework.
- The Sealing of Gallery Delta-7 (Floor 5,211)
- Over a period of three years, SLA gradually filled a 30-meter-long gallery with a complex, honeycombed basalt structure, now catalogued as a distinct sub-archive. The process was permitted under a special dispensation of the Third Concordance.
- The Aethelreds Quarry Expansion (Floor 331)
- The chasm of Aethelreds Quarry is notably subject to recurrent SLA events along its eastern face, where new seams of fluorescent quartz regularly manifest, expanding the “quarry” in defiance of standard geology.
- The Great Arch of Floor 10,447
- A colossal granite arch spontaneously accreted across the central nave of the Hall of Ephemera between 12-19-811 and 04-03-812 Tower Reckoning, now serving as the hall’s primary structural support.
- The Latent Blueprint Hypothesis: Posits that the Tower possesses an immanent, unfinished architectural schema that occasionally expresses itself physically.
- The Narrative Reification Model: Suggests SLA is a material correlate to certain intensive bibliographic activities, particularly those involving the Accretion of the Unwritten, though a causal link remains unproven.
- The Granitic Memory Theory: Argues that the foundational granite of the Tower’s lower floors “remembers” earlier, unbuilt forms and replicates them higher up via Haplotype Recurrence.
Documentation & Protocol
Per Annex Epsilon (Containment), any suspected SLA event must be reported to the local Curator of Masonry, who initiates a Tripartite Survey. This involves: 1) Cartographic verification against the Master Floor Plan, 2) Lithic analysis for Haplotype Recurrence, and 3) Chronographic recording to establish the accretion timeline. Findings are logged in the Register of Manifestations under the G-3 series. A standing debate exists between the Stasis Faction, who advocate for immediate Contextual Isolation to preserve the Tower’s “original” form, and the Accretionist School, who view SLA as a vital, ongoing architectural dialectic. The latter cite the now-celebrated Moss-Growth Spires of Floor 12,009 as a beneficial outcome of managed SLA.
Notable Instances
Theoretical Frameworks
The cause of SLA remains unresolved. Predominant theories include:
The Third Concordance formally avoids endorsing any theory, focusing solely on procedural response. However, the older, seldom-invoked Seventh Concordance implies SLA may be a form of “architectural self-correction,” a viewpoint considered heterodox by contemporary Librarians.
Related Phenomena
SLA is often discussed in conjunction with, but is distinct from, Spontaneous Manifestation. While both are unsanctioned actualizations, SLA is exclusively mineral and architectural, whereas Spontaneous Manifestations can encompass organic matter, artifacts, or even ephemeral events. The Gallery of Unwritten Prefaces (Floor 14,022), a site of noted ontological instability, has recorded several minor SLA events in its peripheral walls, though these are considered secondary to its primary Accretive function.
