Title-smiths
MS 5174.59 · Guilds, orders and offices
Title-smiths are a sub-order of the Librarians responsible for the physical creation and official stamping of Title Sheets, the primary instruments of legal recognition and status transfer within the Tower's bureaucratic framework. Operating under the authority of the Lord Archivist's Office of Formal Designation, their work is governed by a complex web of ordinances, most notably those found within the Seventh Concordance.
Jurisdiction and Specializations
The core mandate of the Title-smiths is the forging of blank Title Sheets, a process that involves impressing the official border sigil and the Aperture—the designated space for the title text—onto specially treated vellum or alloy laminate. This foundational work is conducted on Floor 899, also known as the Provisional Forge. However, the order maintains several specialized delegations. A significant detachment is permanently assigned to Floor 714, the Map Room, where they are exclusively tasked with forging the tandem shelf-markers required for the Holding Title Amp Floor (HTAF) registry, used to resolve multi-floor jurisdictional disputes. The specific alloy for these markers is dictated by Clause 7.3 of the Seventh Concordance, Annex D, which also outlines ventilation requirements for their forges.
Tools and Authentication
A Title-smith’s workshop is characterized by precision hydraulic presses, acid-etching baths, and an array of officially sanctioned dies held under triple lock. The most critical tool is the Sigil-Press, which must be recalibrated by a Measurer-Scribe at the start of each monthly cycle. The completion of a Title Sheet is not merely a matter of mechanical reproduction; it requires the application of the Smith’s Seal, a unique identifier pressed into the lower left quadrant of the sheet. This seal links the physical artifact to its creator, creating a chain of accountability should the sheet’s validity later be questioned by a Verifier or contested before an Arbiter.
Procedural Complexities and the "Unwritten" Debate
The act of title creation is fraught with procedural nuance. A Title-smith may only work from an Authorized Draft, a document bearing the seal of a conferring authority such as a Keeper or a Commissioner. Disputes often arise when the text of a draft spills beyond the confines of the pre-forged Aperture. Title-smiths adhering to a Literalist interpretation will reject such drafts, while others, following the doctrine of "necessary accommodation," may forge a custom sheet with an expanded Aperture, a practice tacitly permitted under the Fifth Concordance but frowned upon by the Director of Standardization. A more profound, theoretical disagreement concerns whether Title-smiths can, or should, forge sheets for titles pertaining to Unwritten Books or purely theoretical concepts. The more conservative faction argues this constitutes creation of referent-less artifacts, while the progressive wing cites the precedent of the Paradox Warden title as proof of concept.
Guild Relations and the Alloy Dispute
While the Title-smiths are a sub-order of the Librarians, their metallurgical work brings them into constant contact with the Seventh Metalwrights, the guild authorized for all non-documentary metalwork. The relationship is one of necessary collaboration and simmering tension. The Seventh Metalwrights supply the base alloys, but the final tempering and sigil-impression remain the sole purview of the Title-smiths. A longstanding conflict, currently under review by the Office of the Senior Librarian for Material Resources, involves the sourcing of cerulean flux, a compound essential for the anti-tarnish coating on HTAF markers. The Metalwrights claim exclusive refinement rights, while the Title-smiths argue that the application process transforms the flux into a "documentary adjunct," placing it under their control.
Notable Holders and Succession
Membership in the Title-smiths is denoted by the honorific "Smith" preceding one's name (e.g., Smith Kael, though this is distinct from the office of Verifier). The highest-ranking member is the Master-Smith, a position currently held by Smith Linus, who oversees the forges on both Floors 899 and 714. While the title of Master-Smith is not formally recorded on the Citizen Roll, the authority of the office is universally recognized. The Title-smiths also maintain the registry of all active Smith’s Seals, a duty that intertwines their function with that of the Scribes who ultimately inscribe the completed sheets. The career of Arbiter Calix, now Holder of Title, famously began with an apprenticeship in the Title-smiths, a background he has cited in several rulings on documentary authenticity.
