Custodian
MS 2800.68 · Practices and doctrines
Custodian is a rank within the administrative hierarchy of the Office of the Custodian, signifying a Librarian vested with specific, delegated authority over a defined set of holdings, protocols, or architectural zones. The title is distinct from, though often conflated with, the broader Office itself. A Custodian operates under a mandate, a document derived from the Custodian’s Manual or its annexes, which precisely delimits their jurisdiction and responsibilities.
Origins and Codification
The formalization of the Custodian rank is contemporaneous with the establishment of the Office in the early Standard Cataloguing Era. Prior to the first compilation of the Manual, authority was exercised through ad-hoc delegation by the Scribe Primus. The need for a stable, replicable system of sub-authorities became acute following the proliferation paradoxes documented in the Lower Stacks. Custodian’s Manual Annex Δ, Clause 3, formally defines a Custodian as "a bearer of sigil and seal, answerable to the Manual, whose domain is bounded by script and whose duty is its maintenance." The first Custodians were appointed to manage the then-newly established Somatic Stacks and the Wing of Institutional Memory.
Grades and Specializations
Custodial mandates are graded according to the complexity and ontological stability of their assigned domains. The most common grades are:
- α-Custodian: Oversees physically contiguous and temporally stable holdings (e.g., a specific floor's main stacks). The majority of Custodians hold this grade.
- β-Custodian: Assigned to domains where holdings exhibit narrative drift or mild causal inconsistency. Their mandate often includes protocols for re-indexing events that have not yet occurred.
- γ-Custodian: A specialist rank, as noted in the records of the Silent Stacks, for managing phenomena exhibiting Uncalibrated Parallelism. Their authority frequently overlaps with, and is sometimes contested by, the Lateral Cataloguing Guild.
Prominent specializations include the Custodian of the Stacks (a title applying to both a person and a body), the Custodian of Surfaces, and the more abstract Custodian of Recursive Truth. The relationship between these specialized Custodians and the general Office bureaucracy is a continual source of procedural annotation.
Appointment and Sigils
Appointment is recorded in the Registries maintained by the Office. A newly appointed Custodian is presented with a sigil-ring, the design of which encodes their mandate's scope and grade. The authenticity of these presentations was, for seventy years, verified by Custodian-Gardener Arlo in his role as Sceptre-Verifier. The Cataloguing Prerogative ultimately rests with the Office, though in practice, the Master Index must concur for any appointment affecting cross-referential integrity.
A custodian's authority is physically manifest in their sigil, which must be applied to any ordinance, inventory, or quarantine order within their domain. The Office of the Custodian maintains that an unsigned order is merely a suggestion.
Jurisdictional Disputes
The precise boundaries between Custodians are a frequent source of scholarly and administrative dispute. A classic example is the ongoing debate regarding the internal shelves of the Somatic Stacks: does authority reside with the Custodian of the Stacks (as custodian of the volume) or the Custodian of Surfaces (as custodian of the shelf unit)? Annex Δ, Clause 7, is often cited by the latter, while older precedents within the Manual proper support the former. Such conflicts are typically resolved, temporarily, by issuing a new, contradictory Concordance.
The HIC Directive 029 further complicates matters, as it grants γ-Custodians emergency powers that can supersede α- and β-mandates within zones of "incipient narrative fission," a condition notoriously difficult to define before it occurs.
Notable Tenures and Recessions
Custodians serve until they resign, are re-assigned, or until their domain is declared "archived" or "theoretically depleted." The tenure of Custodian-Gardener Arlo as Assistant Custodian and Sceptre-Verifier (Y131–Y201 SCE) is considered a model of stable administration. In contrast, the Custodian of Recursive Truth has reportedly been the same individual since the post's creation, as any attempt to appoint a successor creates a logical paradox that voids the appointment decree.
The Office may declare a Custodianship in recession—a state where the title is maintained but the active duties are suspended—if the domain becomes inaccessible, indescribable, or politely forgotten. Several Custodianships in the East Unbound Stacks are perpetually in recession.
Critique and Commentary
The proliferation of Custodians has been critiqued within the Scriptorium Prime as leading to "bureaucratic mitosis," wherein the act of defining a domain inevitably creates the need for a sub-custodian to manage its exceptions. Proponents argue that this very complexity is what allows the Tower to catalogue subjects that do not exist without collapsing into ontological incoherence. As Librarian Theodora noted in her marginalia to the Manual, "A system that catalogues the impossible cannot itself be simple."
