Lateral Cataloguing Guild
MS 5533.01 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Lateral Cataloguing Guild (LCG) is the designated primary custodian and classification authority for all materials and phenomena exhibiting definitive Lateral Weight, operating under the Tripartite Charter of Custody (Clauses 14–22). Its jurisdiction is explicitly spatial, encompassing the West Lateral Stacks, the Lateral Annex on Floor 14,022, and all recognized lateral transitways, including those governed by the Tetra-Lateral Accord. The Guild’s mandate, as refined after the Crisis of the Ambivalent Stairwell, is to prevent the mis-shelving of laterally resonant items into standard vertical stacks, a practice historically linked to several documented instances of localized temporal torsion.
Operational Structure
The Guild is divided into three primary Chambers, each reporting to the Master of Laterals.
- The Chamber of Appraisal is responsible for the initial detection and measurement of Lateral Weight using calibrated devices such as the Aethelred Pendulum and Septamic Resonators. Its findings are logged on Form LWG-7 (Statement of Lateral Intent).
- The Chamber of Placement determines final shelving coordinates within the Lateral Stacks system, coordinating all physical transfers via the Desk of Lateral Correspondence for the Western verticals. Its decisions can be appealed to the Chamber of Review, though such appeals are noted to have a success rate of 2.3% over the last century.
- The Chamber of Review & Concordance maintains the Guild’s internal codex, The Lateral Compendium, and is tasked with reconciling Guild protocols with the broader Tower Concordances. This Chamber is in perpetual, low-grade diplomatic tension with the Guild of Archivists, whose Cataloguing Standards often conflict with lateral-specific classifications.
Notable Holdings and Interventions
The Guild’s catalogued items are defined by their resistance to vertical filing. Prominent examples include:
- The Atemporal Folio of Rhenn: A treatise on doorways that changes its publication date depending on which lateral aisle it is placed in. Currently held in West Lateral Stack, Aisle 44, Beta Shelf.
- The Seventeen Silent Chimes: A set of bells that only resonate when moved along an east-west axis. Their cataloguing entry includes a 300-page supplement on the ethics of unmade sound.
- Collection Δ-7: A series of maps depicting corridors that intersect the Tower at non-perpendicular angles. The Collection is stored in Annex Δ under a joint custody agreement with the Curators of Lacunae.
The Guild’s most significant operational intervention was during the Lateral Compromise of Y212 SCE, where it successfully argued for shared jurisdiction over Sub-basement Gamma, though ceding authority over ink procurement to the Office of Proprietary Inks.
Inter-Guild Relations
The LCG’s relationship with other Guilds is complex and governed by a web of Memoranda of Understanding. It maintains a cooperative, if wary, alliance with the Guild of Measured Echoes for acoustic surveying of lateral spaces. Its interactions with the Guild of Dormant Scribescite Ref 0 are strictly procedural, relating to the transfer of dormant documents that develop lateral properties upon awakening.
Its longest-standing dispute is with the Fifth Scribe’s Guild, which contends that Lateral Weight is a scribal contrivance and not an intrinsic property of knowledge. This disagreement escalated during the Crisis of the Ambivalent Stairwell, a debate centered on Stairwell 44, which the Guild of Resonant Masons later proved emitted signatures of seven distinct lateral archetypes.
Controversies and Scholarly Dispute
The Guild’s authority is not unchallenged. The primary scholarly dispute concerns the ontological status of laterally catalogued items. A faction within the Guild of Exactitude (see their submission of An Unremarkable Spoon) argues that the Guild does not catalogue pre-existing lateral phenomena, but rather creates them through the act of classification and placement in the Lateral Stacks. This "Constructivist School" cites the fact that no item has ever been found to possess measurable Lateral Weight prior to its first appraisal by the Chamber.
Conversely, the Guild’s official position, supported by Concordance 311, Verse 8, is that Lateral Weight is a latent potential activated by precise environmental conditions found only within designated lateral repositories. The debate remains unresolved, though it directly impacts protocols for Movements of Stacks, which require the Guild’s notification.
Current Status
As per the last published Annual Dispatch of Laterals (Y756 Post-Compromise), the Guild maintains active cataloguing operations across seventeen major lateral repositories, with the West Lateral Stacks remaining its central hub. All prospective lateral materials from minor annexes, such as Annex Theta, are routed through the Lateral Annex on Floor 14,022 for preliminary assessment. The Guild’s future directives are anticipated to focus on the classification of "imbricated lateralities"—phenomena that exhibit Lateral Weight in multiple, conflicting directions simultaneously.
