Categoryii Nonsequential Lateral Annex

MS 4772.96 · Practices and doctrines

Categoryii Nonsequential Lateral Annex is a disputed theoretical structure posited by the so-called Lateralists, a scholarly faction within the Lateral Cataloguing Guild that contests the ontological primacy of numbered designations. It is not a physical location but a conceptual framework intended to house materials whose floor-of-origin is either irrelevant or actively misleading. The concept is formally rejected by the Desk of Lateral Correspondence but retains influence in certain cataloguing methodologies applied in the West Lateral Stacks.

Conceptual Foundation

The Categoryii Nonsequential model argues that the Tower's standard organizational principle—sequential floor numbers attached to specific holdings—imposes a false narrative of progression and adjacency. Proponents, such as the theorist Arlen of the Unspun Stair, contend that some concepts, particularly those concerning lateral or recursive phenomena, are degraded by association with a linear "address." The Annex is conceived as a boundless, non-Euclidean shelf-space where entries are linked by thematic resonance rather than physical proximity. A key text, The Former Principles of Lateral Gravity, suggests the Categoryii model is the only logical repository for materials catalogued under the Tetra-Lateral Accord, as their nature defies sequential indexing.

Operational Hypotheses

Despite its non-physical status, several operational protocols have been drafted for the Annex. The most cited, Provisional Guide to Non-Sequential Shelving (Draft ), proposes a system of "relational tags" instead of call numbers. An item on "The Silence Between Footnotes" might be tagged with recursive-silence, meta-textual-void, and lateral-impulse-7, allowing it to be conceptually "shelved" alongside a treatise on the acoustics of The Thirteenth Stairwell (Lateral) and a report on vanished ink in Annex 7-B. Access, theoretically, would be mediated through dedicated contemplation alcoves rather than corridors.

Dispute with Orthodox Cataloguing

The Guild's orthodox majority, led by the Office of the Annex 7-D Superintendent, declares the Categoryii Nonsequential Lateral Annex to be "a category error given architectural form." Concordance 142.7.Δ explicitly forbids the allocation of resources—including clerical hours and ledger pages—to the maintenance of non-territorial annexes. The Desk of Lateral Correspondence routinely issues memos stating that all lateral holdings must be administratively anchored to a verifiable annex, such as Lateral Annex 7 or Annex Δ. Scholars sympathetic to the Categoryii model counter by citing the contradictory Concordance 88.α.3, which states, "A holding is defined by its utility, not its locale."

Alleged Physical Manifestations

Several anomalous spaces within the Lateral Annex system have been informally identified as "leakages" or "echoes" of the Categoryii Nonsequential model. These include:

  • The so-called "Room of Shifting Doors" on the western spur of Lateral Annex 7, where the same doorframe allegedly leads to different subsidiary annexes depending on the cataloguer's current research query.
  • A section of shelving in Annex 12-C where materials related to forgotten languages are filed, which field agents from the Guild of Lateral Navigators report appears to rearrange itself when not directly observed.
  • The archival records pertaining to Annex 12c, which some lateralists claim is not a separate annex at all but a non-sequential instantiation of Annex 12-C itself.
These claims are documented in incident ledgers but are not recognized by official inventory.

Current Status

The Categoryii Nonsequential Lateral Annex remains a heterodox concept, taught as a historical curiosity in Guild seminars but with no budget or staff assigned to it. Its primary function today is as a rhetorical device used in scholarly disputes to criticize the limitations of the Tower's standard taxonomy. A proposal to re-evaluate its status is tentatively scheduled for the agenda of the Lateral Oversight Committee in the fiscal year following the next full inventory of the West Lateral Stacks, an event projected to occur in approximately 142 years.
