Containment Amp Stabilization

MS 5258.31 · Practices and doctrines

Containment Amp Stabilization is the standing procedural union of Containment and Stabilization and Containment, practiced wherever a catalogued non-being threatens to dissolve the floor on which it is held. First codified in the 84th recension of the Codicils of Containment, it is administered in parallel by the Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis and the scriptoria of the Custodians of Fluids Amp Flux, though neither office acknowledges the other's primacy.

Origins and Early Recensions

The procedure arose from the Winter of the Mislaid Tread on Floor 1192-Zeta, when a shipment of unsolid mirrors was logged without a Initial Containment Amp Description and began to reproduce its own absence across three adjacent stairwells. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, later observed that "a thing un-contained is a thing un-stabilized, and the reverse holds only when the Librarian is not counting" (Third Concordance, Annex 4). The earliest surviving manual, the Manual of Percolate Amp Palliative, supplied the doctrinal basis later summarized in Map 1 Initial Containment Amp Description.

By the 200th year of the Second Spiral Registry, Containment Amp Stabilization had been separated from the older Provisional Stabilization accord, on the ruling of Clerk H swept Underbridge, who held that "provisional is a mood, not a mandate" (Ruling of H swept Underbridge, Clause 1). The Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis thenceforth oversaw containment during transit, while the Custodians of Fluids Amp Flux maintained the dampening basins.

Procedure and Phases

Execution begins with the Containment Amp Notification, for which the Initial Containment Amp Description is a mandatory component. Clause 3 of that description mandates the deployment of a calibrated dampening field per the specifications in the Initial Containment Amp Description. The Stabilization Assessment then follows as the formalized second phase of the Stabilization and Containment process, in observance of the principle of Stabilization Before Assessment.

A disputed case is recorded from Floor 77-Delta, where a hereditary contradiction was observed reproducing through the act of counting the contradiction's children. The matter was referred to Paradox Stabilization, the branch concerned with hereditary contradictions that reproduce themselves through observation, and resolved by the Tier Iii Containment Amp Reformation under the Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis. The Ir Number Amp Date of Logging for the incident remains sealed in the Annex of Unsplit Threads.

Visiting clerks may not bring open flasks past the third basin; the rule is posted without exception and has never been appealed.

Scholarly Disagreement

The Fifth Concordance contradicts the Third Concordance on whether Containment Amp Stabilization precedes or follows Phase 2 Retrieval Amp Quarantine. The Fifth Concordance, Appendix Omega, states that "retrieval is the spine and stabilization the breath, and the spine precedes the breath by statute" (Fifth Concordance, Appendix Omega), whereas the Third Concordance holds retrieval internal to containment. The Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis has declined to arbitrate, citing the Codicils of Containment, which it interprets as silent on the point.

Incidents and Annexed Rulings

In the 412th year of the Scriptorium of the Long Aperture, a dampening field was calibrated to the wrong aperture mark, causing a floor of indexed sighs to achieve temporary solidity and block the eastern stair for nine days. The Containment Protocol was amended by the Seventh Recension of Small Clauses, which added a requirement that all field calibrations be witnessed by a clerk of the Isolation Amp Cataloguing office.

"No stabilization is final; it is only the longest pause between two containments."

— Manual of Percolate Amp Palliative, Verse 12

Related Holdings and Cross-Reference

Containment Amp Stabilization draws on Containment and Stabilization and Containment as its root disciplines, and is frequently cross-cited with Initial Containment Amp Description and Stabilization Assessment. The Custodians of Fluids Amp Flux retain the basins; the Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis retains the transit seal. Disputes are logged under the Ir Number Amp Date of Logging and stored in the Annex of Unsplit Threads pending the next recension of the Codicils of Containment.
