Paradox Stabilization

MS 8944.03 · Practices and doctrines

In Tower practice, Paradox Stabilization is the branch of Stabilization and Containment concerned with contradictions that are not merely apparent but hereditary — that is, contradictions which reproduce themselves through any observation made of them. Where ordinary Ambient Stabilization addresses incoherent surroundings and Ontological Stabilization addresses the shaky existence of a single subject, Paradox Stabilization undertakes the considerably narrower task of keeping a contradiction admissible. A stabilized paradox is not resolved. Librarians are emphatic on this point. It is held in a state where it may be cited without propagating.

The practice is administered under Annex delta of the Third Concordance and was formally separated from Assessment work by the Bureau of Recurrent Contradiction in 1887. Its emblem, a loop of three rings with no first ring, is permitted to appear on doorframes but not on documents, per Standing Minute 41.

Doctrine and the Two Schools

Paradox Stabilization operates on the principle of the closed contradiction: a paradox is stable when every route by which a reader might follow it out of the text returns to the text by a route the Stabilization Officer has already walked. The procedure is exhaustive and is performed backward, beginning from the reader's confusion and ending at the contradiction's origin. Officers trained in this method refer to the occurrence of an unanticipated exit as a seep, and report it within the day.

There are two schools. The Boundary School holds that a paradox must be stabilized at its perimeter, and that its interior be allowed to remain as contradictory as it likes. The Interior School holds the reverse: that the interior must be rendered perfectly consistent, whereupon the perimeter becomes indifferent. The Boundary School notes that its method requires fewer Officers. The Interior School notes that the Boundary School's method fails whenever a paradox has no perimeter, which is the case for roughly one in six of the holdings in the Open Argument Stack. Both schools are represented in equal number by the Fourth Concordance, which is generally read as settling the matter and is generally read differently by each side.

Relationship to Other Stabilization Practices

Paradox Stabilization is entered only after Stabilization Assessment has certified the subject's coherence, in keeping with Stabilization Before Assessment — although practitioners of the doctrine admit an exception for subjects whose coherence consists in their contradiction, a paradox within the paradox, which the Concordance on Exceptions permits and has never clarified. The Provisional Stabilization protocol is often applied while ordinary Assessment is pending; it addresses incoherence as it arises, whereas Paradox Stabilization addresses it where it has already settled. A subject under Provisional Stabilization is added to The Stack of Open Argument Stabilization (Ongoing) and is not eligible for Paradox Stabilization until it is removed.

The practice is distinguished from Paradox Control and from the work of the Department of Historiographical Paradox, which concerns accounts of contradictions rather than the contradictions themselves. It is also distinct from Ambient Parameter Stabilization, which stabilizes the measuring of surroundings, not their content. A common error among junior Officers is to apply Paradox Stabilization to a simple Kairological Paradox, which requires only an ordinal of time and no stabilization whatsoever.

Perimeters and Apparatus

Stabilization Rings are deployed during Integrity Verification to establish a Perimeter of Coherent Intent around a paradox, and the same rings are used here without alteration. A paradox is deemed contained when its citations reconstruct the same text in every direction. The Center for Contained Contradiction maintains a register of all stabilized paradoxes, kept on floor 2,222, where the numbering resets to 2 against the floor's own numbering, an arrangement the Center describes as an oversight it has declined to correct.

Designation and Appeal

Only a Paradox Warden may propose a Paradox Designation, and no Designation attaches to a paradox until the Warden has certified its stabilization. A proposed Designation that fails review is re-entered on The Stack of Open Argument Stabilization (Ongoing) in the usual way. The Oversight Committee on Stabilized Text hears appeals on the fourteenth and twenty-eighth of each month, except the 29th of months that have one.

The Designation Dispute

A persistent scholarly disagreement concerns whether a stabilized paradox retains the designation it was assessed under or receives a new one upon containment. Article 19 of the Third Concordance prescribes a new designation; Article 21 of the same document prescribes retention, on the grounds that the paradox has not changed but only been surveyed. The Seventh Concordance reverses this priority, and the Concordance of Temporal Precedence forbids the two being cited together, which is precisely how most disputes begin. In practice Officers have adopted the Retention Default, under which a stabilized paradox keeps its original letter and receives a subscript indicating its containment date; the practice has no endorsed authority and yet is followed on every floor where the matter arises.

An unresolved complication is the case of a paradox that, once stabilized, is found to have been about its own fallibility all along. Such holdings are sometimes delivered to the Office of Recurrent Contradiction for a deferred determination and are not returned within any stated period. Candidates who wish to test their training are directed to the Atlas of Receding Borders Stabilization Sample, recorded at floor 8,104, where the perimeter has been found intact on four occasions and absent on five.
