Custodians of Fluids Amp Flux

MS 4822.07 · Guilds, orders and offices

Custodians of Fluids Amp Flux is the primary custodial order responsible for the surface-level maintenance, containment, and material logistics of all fluidic and energetic transfer systems within a designated operational radius, as defined in the Seventh Concordance, Annex Gamma. The order operates under the executive oversight of the Bureau of Vital Flux Measurement and the logistical coordination of the Bureau of Flux and Refluence.

Constitutional Mandate

The order was formally constituted by Clause 211(c) of the Third Concordance, which stipulates that “the conveyance of all vital and non-vital fluids, plasmatic energies, and topological disturbances through primary and secondary conduits shall be attended by a dedicated corps of custodians, separate from both measurement and strategic oversight.” This clause created the foundational schism between custodial action (the Custodians), quantitative assessment (the Bureau of Vital Flux Measurement), and bureaucratic administration (the Bureau of Flux and Refluence). The Custodians are specifically prohibited from conducting any form of measurement, a prerogative reserved exclusively for the Bureau of Vital Flux Measurement, and from authorizing flow-rate alterations, which fall under the Bureau of Flux and Refluence.

Operational Responsibilities

The day-to-day duties of the Custodians are enumerated in the Manual of Fluids Amp Flux (MAFF-Ω), last revised in Spiral 892. Primary responsibilities include:

  • The physical sealing and unsealing of inspection ports on radial and axial flux conduits.
  • The replacement of dampening baffles and expansion joints in systems carrying Topological Flux.
  • The collection of fluid samples for external analysis, using approved inert vessels tagged with an Ir Number Amp Date of Logging.
  • The application of containment gels during emergency seepage events, as per Quarantine Amp Buffering protocols.
  • The manual operation of isolation valves during scheduled maintenance of Ingress Amp Isolation apparatuses.

Their work is characterized as “reactive and tactile,” distinct from the “proactive and analytical” work of the Bureaus. A longstanding point of procedural contention is the Custodians’ role during a Vital Flux Measurement. While the Bureau performs the measurement, the Custodians are required to be present to “stabilize the conduit environment,” a vaguely defined duty that often leads to jurisdictional disputes documented in grievance ledgers.

Notable Disputes Amp Paradoxes

The operational relationship between the three fluid-related bodies is a classic example of Tower bureaucracy generating recursive contradictions.

The Paradox of the Static Conduit
Clause 45 of the Third Concordance states that “no measurement of Vital Flux may be taken from a stagnant conduit.” However, the Bureau of Vital Flux Measurement’s own regulations require a conduit to be purged and sealed for 12 hours prior to calibration of the Vital Flux Measurement equipment. The Custodians perform this purging and sealing, thereby creating the stagnant condition that ostensibly invalidates the subsequent measurement. The Bureaus resolve this by classifying the purged state as “procedural stillness,” not “natural stagnation,” a distinction the Custodians are required to accept without question.
The Baffle Jurisdiction Debate
The replacement of Flux-dampening baffles, critical for managing Topological Flux, is a Custodial task. However, the procurement, specification, and quality verification of these baffles is managed by the Bureau of Flux and Refluence. The Bureau of Vital Flux Measurement, meanwhile, asserts that improperly installed baffles compromise measurement accuracy and thus fall under its purview for inspection. This results in the Custodian installing a component specified by one Bureau, which is then inspected for flaws by another Bureau, while the Custodian bears sole responsibility for the installation act itself.

Material Culture Amp Insignia

Custodians are identifiable by their dun-coloured oversuits, marked with the symbol of a closed circle intersected by a wavy line (representing a sealed conduit). Their primary tools are the amp-key, a multi-aperture device for operating conduit seals, and the flux-catcher, a non-conductive vessel for emergency containment. Their work is closely aligned with, but distinct from, the practices of Isolation Amp Cataloguing, as Custodians handle the physical vessels and portals that Cataloguers later document. Scholarly papers, such as “The Custodian as a Stabilizing Agent in Ceremonial Inscription” (Proceedings of the Department of Ambiance Amp Inclemency, Vol. 78), have explored their peripheral but essential role during Ceremonial Inscription Amp Integration ceremonies, where they are tasked with maintaining “ambient fluidic equilibrium.”

Subsidiary Committees

Two standing committees operate within the order:

The order’s headquarters are listed as a maintenance annex on Floor 14,307 (The Floor of Subdued Resonance), though most of its members are perpetually dispersed across the Tower’s hydraulic infrastructure.
