Humoral Purges
MS 0282.97 · Practices and doctrines
The Purges were authorized under Clause VII.δ of the Third Concordance, which granted the Custodians of Fluids & Flux extraordinary powers of "metaphysical sanitation" during periods of "diagnosed ambient instability." The primary catalyst was the so-called Great Humoral Flux of Year 111, during which entire wings of the archive reported phenomena including spontaneous weeping from plumbing (Phlegmatic overflow), aggressive crystallization of ink (Choleric excess), and a pervasive, unshakable lethargy among copyists (diagnosed as a Melancholic miasma).
Operational Phases
The Purges were conducted in three distinct phases. Phase Alpha involved survey and diagnosis. Teams from the School of Humoral Cartography, operating from the Humoral Spire, mapped the Tower's floors using calibrated humoral cartographs to identify "zones of humoral criticality." Contained areas were marked with sigils corresponding to the dominant humor.
Phase Beta was the active containment period. The Mystic Plumbers’ Union was contracted to install specialized Splenic Ductwork to drain and redirect accumulations of Black Bile (the physical correlate of Melancholy) to containment reservoirs, most notably the Splenic Swamp on Floor 44. Similar infrastructure was built for the sequestration of yellow bile (Choleric) and phlegm. Production nodes for synthesizing Black Bile for controlled study were also established during this phase, a controversial decision that would later be scrutinized by the Committee for Semantic Parity.
Phase Gamma was the re-cataloguing phase. Documents, artifacts, and even architectural features judged "humorally compromised" were not destroyed but transferred to auxiliary annexes under strict quarantine protocols. Their catalogue entries were appended with the humoral hazard symbol (), a practice discontinued after the Fourth Concordance but still visible on some older index cards.
Key Infrastructure and Legacy
The most enduring physical legacy of the Purges is the network of humoral conveyance systems. The Splenic Ductwork remains the most extensive, though large sections are now dormant. The Splenic Swamp continues to serve as the primary repository for Black Bile synthesized during the Humoral Purges, monitored by the Department of Ambiance & Inclemency for signs of "metaphysical seepage."
The Purges also led to the formalization of the Ambient Regret scale, a metric for measuring the residual melancholic pressure in a given location, which is still in use by certain schools of progressive cartography.
Controversies and Scholarly Dispute
Modern scholarship is divided on the efficacy and ethicality of the Purges. The School of Latent Structure, which synthesizes principles from the School of Humoral Cartography, argues the Purges were a necessary, if blunt, instrument for preventing a total humoral cascade that could have destabilized the Tower's conceptual foundation. They point to the successful containment of the Spleen as evidence of their success.
Critics, however, cite the Fourth Concordance, which explicitly contradicts the Third Concordance's Clause VII.δ, stating that "the isolation of a quality does not purify the whole, but merely creates a new category of absence." They argue the Purges merely displaced humoral imbalances, creating the conditions for later phenomena like the Great Dolor of Year 203. Furthermore, the Committee for Semantic Parity issued a post-facto ruling in Year 150 that the classification of entire collections as "Choleric" or "Melancholic" constituted a categorical error, confusing the container with the contained.
Post-Purge Reactivations
The protocols of the Humoral Purges have been reactivated on eleven subsequent occasions, most recently in Year 891 following the "Incident of the Sighing Stacks" on Floor 770. These reactivations are typically limited in scope, often triggered by a Plumbers’ Union Petition for Erratum concerning blockages with identifiable humoral signatures. Each reactivation requires a joint ruling from the Custodians of Fluids & Flux and the Central Administrative Spire, a process noted for its extensive and conflict-prone paperwork.
The official record of the Purges is maintained in Annex Ω of the Central Administrative Spire, though scholars note that the humidity in the annex consistently registers a 7.2 on the Ambient Regret scale, suggesting the subject matter may exert a humoral influence on its own documentation.
