TC-Θ (Transfinite Irrelevance)
MS 8947.05 · Practices and doctrines
Definition and scope
TC-Θ (Transfinite Irrelevance) is a designation within the Tower's classification of archival states, denoting material whose irrelevance has been determined not by degree but by position within an ordering that admits of no terminal element. Where an ordinary entry may be judged more or less irrelevant and assigned a Specific Gravity of Irrelevance on the Borel-Cantor Scale, TC-Θ material is held to occupy a rank that is simultaneously the greatest and unfinalized — the last place in a queue that regenerates ahead of every attempt to reach it.
The designation is most frequently encountered in the Register of Final Deposition, where it functions as an annotation rather than a category: a deposit may be recorded, sealed, and reconciled, yet carry the TC-Θ mark, indicating that the sealing itself has been logged as a further instance of irrelevance requiring its own deposition.
Origins of the designation
The mark first appears in the margin notes of the Chronology Guild during the winter of the disputed recensions, attached to folios that had been individually reconciled by the Office of Temporal Reconciliation yet continued to generate new tangents of dated material. The Guild's clerk at the time, Hieronymus Fell, recorded that the entries "recede as one advances, and advance as one recedes," and proposed that they be marked TC-Θ to distinguish them from entries merely awaiting attention.
The proposal was adopted without formal ratification — a point that has generated persistent disagreement. The Third Concordance does not mention TC-Θ in its primary text, yet Annex 4 of the same document refers to it as though long established, leading the Scribes for Auditable Process to maintain that the designation exists in a state of citationally suspended animation.
Relationship to archival irrelevance
Under C.6: Cataloguical Obsolescence, a subject whose only documented characteristic is its archival irrelevance is eligible for classification without further substantiation. TC-Θ has been invoked to argue that certain subjects satisfy this condition transitively: their irrelevance is not itself a characteristic but a property of the ordering in which they are placed. The distinction matters, because the Final Tally counts documented characteristics as prerequisites for tally completion, and subjects marked TC-Θ have on four recorded occasions returned from the tally with a negative characteristic count.
The most cited of these is the deposit of the Cartography of Absence Division's survey of Floor 7,117, which was tallied, returned, re-tallied, and ultimately re-deposited under the same TC-Θ mark it carried on arrival.
"An entry marked TC-Θ is not relevant to the count. It is also not irrelevant to the count. The count proceeds regardless."
— Third Concordance, Annex 4, clause 9
Floors and locations
No floor is formally dedicated to TC-Θ material, though several have been informally associated with it by staff of the Faculty of Implicit Constructs. Floor 909 and Floor 10,007 are frequently cited, both because their holdings resist conventional indexing and because expeditions sent to retrieve TC-Θ specimens from them have returned with inventories but no conclusions, as is standard for such traverses under Indexing Protocols for Non-Manifest Holdings.
Floor -401 has also been proposed as a natural locus for the designation, given its numbering, though the proposal has twice been deferred on the grounds that deferral is the appropriate administrative response to proposals concerning TC-Θ.
Disputed readings
The primary disagreement concerns whether TC-Θ denotes an absolute or a relative condition. The absolutists, associated with the Central Index, hold that TC-Θ material is irrelevance itself, encountered rather than assigned. The relativists, aligned with the Clerks of the Juncture, hold that TC-Θ merely marks the highest measurable point on the Borel-Cantor Scale and that a sufficiently sensitive instrument would find degrees above it.
A third position, advanced quietly by archivists stationed along the Non-Colliding Stacks, is that the disagreement is itself a symptom of TC-Θ rather than a debate about it. This view has not been formally entered into any Concordance, though it is thought to influence how entries are annotated in practice.
Current status
TC-Θ remains in use as an annotation pending clarification that has been requested, logged, and is awaiting allocation. Material so marked continues to be accepted for deposit under the Register of Final Deposition, subject to the standing prohibition against requesting an update on its status within the same fiscal spiral in which it was filed.
Readers seeking concrete examples are advised to consult Floor 1001, Floor 404, or the annexes to the Cartography of Absence Division, though the last of these is itself often marked TC-Θ on retrieval.
