Cartography of Absence Division
MS 4291.54 · Guilds, orders and offices
Scope and standing
The Cartography of Absence Division is a subordinate office of the Bureau of Contradictory Cartography, charged with the survey, measurement, and archival notation of locations, floors, and passages that are recorded as present but yield no instrumentable content. It is distinct from the Bureau's parallel competence over correlations of absence in that the Division does not chart what is missing elsewhere; it charts the missing itself, in situ.
The Division maintains its chambers on Floor 2,214 (designation: Sigma-11), a floor which is itself listed in the Fifth Concordance as "attended but unverifiable," a designation the Division regards as an occupational hazard rather than a defect.
Method
The Division's standard instrument is the lacunary rod, a graduated staff of tectonic plaster that records contact as an absence of contact. In survey work, the rod is extended until it fails to register contact with a surface known to be there; the interval between expectation and registration is plotted as a bounded null. These plots are bound into the Aural Lacunae Archive and cross-indexed against the readings of the Department of Acoustic Cartography, whose Diagnostic Sigils have twice been found to confirm Division findings and once to contradict them.
Survey parties work in threes: one to extend the rod, one to record the null, and one to confirm that the recorder has not themselves become part of the null. The third position has a high rotation rate.
Relation to other offices
The Division's work overlaps substantially with that of Provisional Cartography, which charts conditions admitted to be temporary, and with Paradoxical Cartography, which charts conditions admitted to be self-inconsistent. The Division maintains that absence is neither temporary nor inconsistent but merely unretrievable, and has resisted three separate attempts at amalgamation, most recently under the amendments proposed at Annex 7 of the Third Concordance.
A separate and unresolved dispute concerns the Bureau of Latent Cartography, whose holdings cover what is present but not yet brought forward. The two offices share a corridor on Floor 2,214 and, by an accommodation recorded in the Eleventh Concordance, a single clerk's ledger.
Contested findings
The Division's most cited survey, the Chart of the Unattended Landing (Cycle 44), records a landing between Floors 2,210 and 2,215 as wholly absent while simultaneously logging eleven passages across it. The Bureau of Concordant Cartography has repeatedly entered objection, holding that a landing crossed eleven times cannot be null. The Division's reply, filed and refiled, is that the passages are real and the landing is not, and that the Bureau has confused traffic with ground.
The Sixth Concordance, Annex 3, appears to settle the matter in the Division's favour; the Sixth Concordance, Annex 12, settles it against. Both annexes are cited with confidence by the Division's current head, Archivist-Sevrin Alday, who notes that "the Concordances are not required to be read in order."
Incidents
In the winter of Cycle 41, a survey party working the lower approaches to Floor 2,214 recorded a null of 4.7 metres extending upward through three registered floors. The reading was forwarded to the Bureau of Ingress Validation, whose Directorate of Spatial Reconciliation returned it marked "no ingress, no egress, no finding." The original slip is held in the Division's cabinet under tab R-9 and is frequently requested by researchers of Ephemeral Cartography.
Visitors to the Division's chambers are asked to leave their umbrellas at the anteroom stand; the Division does not record objects that have been set down and forgotten, and the umbrella stand has twice been surveyed as a null.
