Faculty of Implicit Constructs

MS 2220.31 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Faculty of Implicit Constructs is a procedural body within the Tower, established under Provision 8.δ of the Doctrine of Implicit Containment. Its mandate is the review, accreditation, and oversight of constructs whose ontological status is deemed provisional, or "implicit," within the archival framework of Floor 314 and its related annexes.

The Faculty operates from Chamber Ξ-77, adjacent to the Spiral 422 (South-Western Branch), and maintains a permanent liaison desk at the Meta-Registry of Archival Kinetics. Its rulings are considered binding for all cataloguing purposes, though they are frequently contested under other numbered Concordances.

Jurisdiction and Purview

As defined in the seminal case In re: The Whispering Gallery of Floor 122 (Year 714), the Faculty's jurisdiction extends to any "constructed entity, system, or phenomenon whose existence is inferred, anticipated, or logically necessitated by a recorded precedent, but which has not yet been formally observed or documented." This notably includes:

  • Architectural features predicted by blueprints but never built.
  • Catalogued sounds with no verified source.
  • Entities referenced in unfinished manuscripts or Unheard Speeches.
  • Logical extensions of documented systems that have ceased function.

Its authority is expressly limited by the Thorne Principle, which prohibits the Faculty from accrediting constructs that would violate foundational architectural axioms, such as those governing the Non-Sequential Stairwells.

Accreditation Process

Accreditation is a three-phase process. Phase One involves a petition, typically filed by a sponsoring Librarian or a Conservator of the Implicit, detailing the construct's inferred properties and its logical lineage from established holdings. Phase Two is a review by a panel of three Senior Assessors, who evaluate the petition against the Registry of Implicit Bindings and relevant Concordances. Phase Three, if approved, results in the issuance of a Laminate of Provisional Reality—a physical certificate, stamped with the Faculty's sigil, that must be affixed to the primary access point of the construct (e.g., a doorframe, a plinth, or the first page of a relevant ledger).

"The laminate does not create the construct; it acknowledges the debt the archive already owes to its possibility." — Assessor Thelon, Commentaries on Implicit Jurisprudence, Vol. XII

The Kerning Dispute

The Faculty's most persistent internal conflict, known as the Kerning Dispute, concerns the ontological weight of typographical errors. One faction, led by Assessor Varna, argues that a consistently misspelled name across multiple documents (e.g., "The Atrium of Unseen Linages" instead of "Lineages") constitutes an implicit construct separate from the correctly spelled entity—in this case, a potential divergence from the Atrium of Unseen Lineages. The opposing faction, led by Assessor Greeve, maintains that such errors are mere noise and that accrediting them would lead to infinite regress and the accreditation of "every blot, smudge, and scribal tic." The dispute has been tabled since Year 802, resulting in a de facto moratorium on accrediting text-based implicit constructs, though petitions are still accepted and stored in the Pending Annex.

Notable Accredited Constructs

The Seventh Pillar of the Silent Choir
Accredited in Year 743. Architectural plans for the Choir Hall on Floor 899 showed seven support pillars. Only six were ever physically catalogued by survey teams. The Faculty ruled that the structural logic of the plans implicitly contained the seventh, granting it accredited status. A cool, persistent draft noted by surveyors is now officially attributed to its "non-corporeal, load-bearing presence."
The Unpublished Appendix to the Nature of Irregularity
Accredited in Year 691. The definitive treatise on the Nature of Irregularity concludes with the phrase, "A fuller discussion of consequential asymmetries must await a subsequent appendix." No such appendix was ever filed. The Faculty accredited the Appendix as an implicit construct, assigning it a shelf-mark (Ξ-771.A1) and a designated (though empty) storage carrel, which is dusted weekly.
The Implicit Apex of the Schism
A politically sensitive accreditation from Year 588. During the Schism of the Implicit Apex, both factions claimed their position was the logically necessary culmination of the Doctrine of Implicit Containment. The Faculty, in a rare unanimous decision, accredited the Apex itself as an implicit construct, declaring both factional interpretations to be "partial shadows cast by the unmanifest whole." This effectively neutered the schism by placing its core object of contention outside operational reach.

Relationship with Other Bodies

The Faculty maintains a complex, often adversarial relationship with the Office of the Archivist, which views implicit accreditation as a "premature solidification of the possible." Conversely, it works closely, if uneasily, with the Dialectical Containment Bureau, providing the ontological grounding for many of the Bureau's Temporary Permanencies. Its most direct oversight comes from the MRAK, which audits a random selection of laminates every fifth year for compliance with the ever-shifting Doctrine of Implicit Resolution.

The Faculty’s existence underscores a foundational Tower principle: that the boundary between the catalogued and the uncatalogued is not a wall, but a gradient. Its work ensures that the archive’s shadow—the shape of what it has not yet recorded—is itself accorded a respectful, meticulously documented space.
